I will quit my current job in a matter of few weeks, and I am not sure if I will get a good reference from my current job. So...do you ask ur manager or boss or HR before leaving the job?

they can't say anything but when you worked, so it doesn't matter. And any letter of reference, you'd see yourself.

have them call your company's HR they will verify the dates that you've worked in that company.

It's my understanding that my current employer can say whether they will rehire me or not. And it's this bit that I worry about.

so...should I just ask my boss "if I leave this job, will I get good reference if future employer calls in?" This sounds awkward to me.

That depends on how good of a term you are with him, and why do you want to leave, and all that kind of things.

Never burn your bridges in your job, you may work with them again in the future.
