Ok I have a question for those who participate in the hiring of individuals, or are in a similar situation as I am.

How does military service (~4 years) look on a resume along with a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science, and a B.S. in applied Mathematics? Does it even matter to employeers when they are considering someone for employment? And my military experience is not in the IT field, but in the medical arena. Just curious. Thanks.
 
i don't work in the hiring field, but i would compare it with your total work experience. i.e. if you have been in the service for 4 years and only have been out of college for 5, then it wouldn't look as good as someone who has been in the same line of work for 5 years instead of 1 + service.

i think it would depend on the job and service... if he was in a leadership position for those 4 years, then that could easily make up for WE... or if his service was related to the job in question
 
For federal jobs military service is almost a requirement to get past the initial screening.

Any experience is good. Military experience can be difficult to translate into terms understood by civilian employers so it is always good to have a civilian who doesn't know any military jargon to review your resume. Telling an employer that you were an NST-9 on a multi-platform seaframe doesn't convey "nuclear engineer".

Yes I was in a leadership position for about 2 years of ~15 people. However my experience/job in the military was not in the IT field, which is why I tend to think employers might not recognize it at all.

In the job market these days, education doesn't seem to be enough, and I would hope to get at least some sort of credit for those 4 years.

doesn't matter if it is expired, you should list any DOD/DOE/whatever clearances you held in the past, it shows you had position of trust, etc
 
the only time i ever saw it work against was when military guy applies a a kinda "hippy" company...the hr person didnt like the militry establishment thus all militray people got filed into the no pile...not cool at all but just watch out who you apply with
 
yeah fobot is correct Having had a clearance in the past, makes it is easier for you to obtain a renewal clearance. If you are looking at gov't contractors, seeing that is a HUGE plus. The company I work for a majority of the management here is from some form of military background, and/or are in the NG/USAR etc. Your military experience, and your clearance are huge so I'd put them on the top. I'm only 21, and don't do hiring, but do have my clearance so its a huuuge help!

Personally, if I were in the position of hiring employees their education would be a non issue. As would their "work experience" Too many people I've worked with in the past have big long resume's or went to a big expensive school...Sad thing is they can't learn anything new to save their life. I sometimes wonder why they chose the IT field...

I've been involved in hiring software developers at this job and at my previous one.

It's definitely worth listing even if not directly related. Try to explain what the civillian equivalnet of what your work was, and note what parts of your work (such as leadership) might apply to the job you're seeking.

The bad news is that it could put you ahead of a green fresh grad, but you'll stil be behind someone with more relevant work experience.
 
If you're normal, it's a plus, if you're nuts, I know you're really nuts. Just my experience. I know it's come up as a plus during an interview for at least 3 of the 4 in my family.

if you are interested in IT, you should apply for Accenture. when i was there, there were a lot of ex-military people there....a lot of them did quite well, and have a pretty strong network among their consultants
 
Well I just finished my masters and was recruited by 1 defense contractor (General Dynamics) and both the NSA and FBI already. The NSA and FBI were not something that I was interested in at all, due to the military-like routine of moving to work where they tell you without question. The General Dynamics position was in Europe, and seeing how my wife is still in college and I just started my 2nd masters (doing a MSIS this time, part-time), I didn't want to relocate that far away, even with the good pay and cola they were offering.

What I really want to do is get in with a smaller/mid size company (<1,000 employees), and hopefully somewhere in NY or FL. The search is on, so hopefully I will be able to get in somewhere. If not, I will end up working at the local car wash 😛
