The general stuff someone would want to know if they were looking to move to a new city. Price of a small apartment (seems to be around $400+), areas of the city to avoid for sure, good places for night life, anything else that I might need to know.

Someone persuade me to move back north!

Well, depending on where you live in PA I can't really determine if Syracuse would be an upgrade. I lived in Rochester, NY for a year though and I really enjoyed living there. Rochester is a great town with great people. Go Bills!!!

Really, you aren't going that far north...not sure why that's even a consideration.

I'm in northern PA now, Syracuse is only like a 2 1/2 hour drive from me as it is. I'm just wondering about the actual city, not the weather or anything like that. And I've always loved the snow so I'm not worried about that.

Oh and the town I'm currently in has a population of about 5,000 people, so anything is an upgrade.

Syracuse sports are da bomb. What I mean is. . . they have the Carrier Dome and S.U. men's football and especially the basketball team are really fun to watch there.

Can't help you on the night life as I'm only in town for games and then we usually hit small pubs near the Dome like Faegens, but it's a college town so there is 'lots of night life.

I live 30 minutes south of Syracuse. Have the occasional big act come through because of Syracuse University. If you like college sports, good school to watch. The city is nothing great, I lived in Atlanta for 6 years before moving back to NY because I have small children now and this is where my wife and my family are from. Its cheap to live here and a fantastic place to be in the summer, but the winters are unbearably long and depressing towards the end.

What opportunity do you have here if you don't mind me asking?

For night life, you're more or less looking at Armory Square downtown. There are a bunch of bars and a few clubs in that area and almost all of the places are open until around 2:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights. There are a few good bars scattered around other places in the city (Faegans and Colemans are two that I've been to), but I'd say the most activity is probably in Armory Square.

For other stuff to do, there is always SU sports as Mosh said. Football and basketball are the main draws, but the lacrosse team is usually one of the best in the nation and their games are pretty fun too. Syracuse has a AAA baseball team called the Skychiefs.....tickets are usually dirt cheap and it's a pretty fun way to spend 2 or 3 hours in the summer. If you're looking for a day trip type of thing, there are a few nearby towns that have stuff to offer. Skaneateles has a nice lake and is a nice place to spend a few hours walking around in the summer. If you like the outdoors, Ithaca isn't all that far away and has a fair amount stuff to do. You can also go to the track at Watkins Glen to watch one of the NASCAR road races (Bud at the Glen) at some point during the year if you're into that. Turning Stone Casino is in Verona, NY (~45 min away).

As far as apartments go, if you're looking to live around the University area, a fairly good rule of thumb is to look on the campus side of I-81. A friend of mine had a decent apartment in a decent neighborhood on the east side of the city and the west side around the Tipperary Hill area isn't too bad either. Otherwise, maybe take a look at some of the suburbs like Liverpool, Jamesville, or DeWitt.

One place you might want to check out is Syracuse.com. It's run by the local newspaper (Post-Standard) so you might be able to get some good information about nightlife and other stuff to do from there. That's all I got for now.

Its ok...the only reason I ever go up there is to go to the Carousel Mall. However, my sister will most likely be going to law school there later on in the year so I might be making some more frequent trips up there in the future.

Oh yeah, lolz for snow. I know we have it bad but Syracuse always seems to get it even worse.

Get ready for over 8 feet of snow annually. Other than snow in the winter I would say SU for their sports teams. I'm in Rochester, NY right now, and I personally hate it. Not my thing I want to get back home so I can have the coast and ocean as well as the mountains (I'm from Maine). I find western New York to be dreary, seems like most days are overcast. Also humid in the summer. These observations are based on being an hour west of Syracuse, but I imagine they are fairly similar.

Syracuse is my alma mater and I loved it for 5 years of undergrad and grad. Love SU bball and football and i love the area. Let me jsut tell you that if i made the same money in Syracuse I would live like a king!

Faegans, Lucy's, and Armory Square are the bomb... Go to Awful Al's and Blue Tusk... just some suggestions..

Good info guys. I'm originally from the Corning/Elmira area so I know central NY pretty well. College sports aren't really my thing, so I was thinking more along the lines of trendy bars and/or clubs, which you've mentioned a few of. Are there any bad parts of the city that I should definitely stay out of? I might be going up for an interview the end of this week so I may stay a night next weekend and check out the city on my own.

I spent my college years in Rochester, which is like Syracuse twin, yet dumber brother. Both are decent college towns, and the bar scenes are pretty good when its not 20 below. I wouldn't know of any of the good bars in Cuse though.

Syracuse is actually a lot sunnier than Rochester. I live down in Chautauqua county, but in the Buffalo News there is the "Sunshine Derby" everyday.

An excerpt from today's paper:

Sunshine Derby:
50% or greater sunshine is a sunny day
City-Month to date-Year to date
Buffalo-8-11
Rochester-1-2
Syracuse-11-19
Orlando-11-15
Phoenix-13-33

So Syracuse is actually sunnier than Orlando, FL ;p
