Job Performance Self-Appraisal

I'm writing one now for myself and its tough trying to objectively assess my own performance.

I don't want to come out like I'm bragging and at the same time I want to divulge every single accomplishment that my boss may be oblivious for the entire year.

I hated those at my last job.

The last couple years I simply didn't do them, & told them they could withhold my raise if they wanted to.

Not like it would have any impact on my raise anyway, they were stingy as hell after the tech bubble burst.

I got my raises anyway.

I was going to make the same point. Managers pretty much have it decided already (promotion, raise, or no raise).

The question is: how much weight does a reviewer place on a self-appraisal when they already base everything on their individual observation of the person against company/department metrics?

hrmm ... isn't the reviewer your manager? I hate this things too don't have to do one till march! 🙂

Just write down every project you've down and the impact it had on your group or company ... easy if you've actually done something .. 🙂

It will let the reviewer know if you are aware of your own strengths/weaknesses.

Yep, I have to do one anually as well. My self appraisal usually winds up being my supervisor's finished appraisal for me. 🙂

dummy, you don't objectivley assess your own performance.

You simply say "I rock, and this is how I rock, now gimme a raise!"
😉

This is when you toot your horn.

Don't do one. Boss does it and then its discussed. My discussion lasted an hour and a half and I never said more than 2 words. Got a 8% raise though and hope to do double that this year so its worth sitting through the discussion.

Never say anything bad since this stay on your HR file. Don't have to brag but don't put yourself down either. Just say stuff like could improve on time management and stuff.

I fill out a review questionaire that's more like a "how do you feel" and "what can we do to make your job better" type of thing. The boss fills out the appraisal, and gives me a good raise. I've gotten at least $1.50 an hour for the past 4 years.

I have had to do that too. Just toot your own horn and if your boss is as clueless as mine you will do fine.
