Here's the situation.

I'm currently employed selling motorcycle stuff and recently got promoted to essentially a management position, not a manager though. I'm essentially second in charge of the store, not an assistant manager by title, but I open and close and am in charge a couple days per week. I don't make a ton of money but make decent money for a college student and make some commission as well. Also I actually somewhat like my job. Not a huge fan of all the corporate bs that I get to deal with but I like the position and the people I work with.

Here's the kicker. I have some contacts in the car business and since I've been doing well at sales I might have an opportunity at car sales. This could potentially net me much more in take home money and for being in college could mean much more to either spend on or save for. Base salary would likely be the same and after commission, depending on how I do, could be starting out at around $500 a month more than what I currently make. The unknowns being I don't know that I'll be able to sell cars and that I don't know the people currently.

Cliffs:
Like my current job and like the people.
Been there long enough to get promoted, plus its easy.
Make modest pay.

Potentially have opportunity at car sales...can work my way up.
Unknown on people there. would need to schedule an interview.

ATOT do you think this might be a step up, at least for now? Or should I stay? If I stay maybe I'd have a shot At Assistant Manager should I choose to pursue it...we haven't had one in at least 5-6 months. No rush on my manager to get one now.

Degree in MIS.

Thanks for advice in advance.

Go for the interview but be aware that you're taking a big risk by leaving a stable job that you like and are good at with the potential for promotion.

But if the money's good, and you feel you'd be secure there, go for it.

Just remember that you're a college student, and stable work that you actually enjoy is rare.

Selling cars takes a LOT more time than selling motorcycle accessories... a car buying decision is normally a 2 day process with many phone calls in between discussing everything. There are those deals you close that day (not to rare, but also you have to hit the right person)

What brand?

Car job could be either Audi, Porsche, or Caddy and u think one other. Toughest thing for me to think about right now is that I like my current job, which is apparently a rarity, especially among college students, and that at te car place there is more potential for more money upfront. Although I think I'll be making about $250 or more per month at the motorcycle place since my commission got bumped.

I'm leaning towards staying for the time. How does 2-3 years at a job look vs 1 and 1? Or 2 and 1?

I'll say this - if you can sell, nobody cares how long you stayed at a job in the past.

College student hours are inflexible. If ur current job works you rock that boat.

Take it. In this economy you should not be passing opportunities. Not to mention that once you are employed it actually opens up other doors you either didnt know about, or couldnt enter.
