I just proposed to my GF over the weekend... I know her parents really like me and after I proposed they started talking about a job that opened up where her father works as a network engineer.

I had Cisco Classes about 5-6 years ago but forgot a lot of info from those classes due to not working in that field so much... My current Job is mostly software/hardware installations and tech support.

I make 40K per year where I'm at now but the Job opening that is with the future father in law starts at 70K per year... There is not guarantee that I would get the Job but using him as a reference I have a decent shot.

I love my Job where I'm at now
1. I know the people
2. I've been here for 6 years and my job is very secure
3. I love what I do... I think I might like networking too though
4. I have a lot of loyalty to my employer... Wouldn?t want to screw him over
5. Work great hours

I have already sat down and talked with my employer (very hard thing to do) and I know he encourages me to at least try for the new Job... I mean I will be getting married sometime next year and will start thinking about family.

I know that if I were to get the new Job they would be sending me to classes, they would want me to be CCNP certified. I also know the Job is salary and I could be expected to be called at any time... I know the future Father in law sometimes gets called in 3:00am... Would be hard.

I guess my biggest conflict is my loyalty to my current Job. They treat me good and gave me a chance even though I don't have a degree. I know that if I were to just leave that there are allot of things that even my boss doesn?t know that I would have to help with.

Sorry if I am going on, part of this post is me sorting out my thoughts and then looking at them....

Some minor cliffs:
1. New Job opened with future father in law
2. I feel loyalty to my current Job
3. New job pays 30K per year more than current Job
4. I have a decent chance of getting new job
5. New Job might have more difficult hours and force me to leave my comfort zone

Update:
Ok, here is the situation.... Right now the Job is between me and 1 other person... The other peerson is straight out of college with no work experience in the IT Field. I don't have a degree but have 6 years at my current job and 2 years running a small computer reapir company with my friend.

The other guy is a friend of the family as well... The other guy is only asking for entry level pay (35K-40K). I was told that being that this is the case I would probably be expected to hire in at 50-55K if they choose me.

While this is still a nice jump in pay there are several things for me to consider.

1. I live only about 1.5 miles from my current job... New Job is more like 50-60 miles.
2. I have Vacation time/seniority built up here and know the people
3. New Job may or may not pay for me cell phone and home internet (would help)
4. Only advancement in my current job would be when my boss retires in 10 yrs.
5. Bennefits should be about the same
6. Job security might actually be slightly better at new job
7. More chances for raises/bonuses at new job
8. New Job would have me work normal hours then be on call the rest of the time. Current Job has a 40hr ww and Im not on call. Very nice schedule actually.

I know there are more things to consider but I need to sit down and think about them.

Anyways, I should be expecting a call soon to talk to the big boss and find out more details and find out if I should be expecting 50-55k or 65-70k.

You're setting yourself up for a heavy fall if things go pear-shaped with your missus.

That is one thing I thought about briefly...
We have such a great relationship that its hard to imagine anything happening like that but I see your point.

30k is pretty significant, considering it strongly I say, you cant always have good work hours and still make great money (atleast when you are just starting your career/mid level), the higher you get in the pay scale/rank , work hours/responsibility increases

true, but that shouldnt keep the OP from taking the new job. Lets say things do go sour with the wifey in a couple of years, and OP ends up without a job (highly unlikely since father in law is an engineer and not a manager), OP still would have the experience he acquired while at Cisco to look for a new, better job than what he has right now.

I say go for the new job!! and good luck

I'm highly optimistic that things between us will not go sour :)
Anyways, everyone I've talked to says to go for it including the wife to be... Also, Her father is one of the managers the position I would be going for would be the engineer.. I should have made that more clear. The point you bring up about the Cisco training is good though... That is valuable information that would help me if I did ever lose that job for some reason.

There is always a reason why an opportunity is presented to you, take it. It will help you learn more and become more experienced (although 6 years of experience is really good). It will help you broaden opportunities to potential job . Do not burn bridges though, if you really like your current employer you can get out in good terms and probably come back in the future, with more knowledge, certified and most likely with more money.

Very true... I have spoke with my current employer about the situation presented to me this weekend. He seems to think it might be a good opportunity for me as well. I know if I stay here (Local government IT job) that the only way for me to advance is to move into the spot my Boss currently has whch most likely will be 10 years from now when he retires.

LOL, my boss and I have an excellent working relationship... Sometimes we seem to more of friends than anything. I guess you would have to be in my work enviroment to understand this.

Leaving your comfort zone is something you should try doing every day as it will make you a better person in th elong run. And when you figure out how, let me know.
