Job Opportunity - Stay or leave, need advice!

Hello all, please help me out!

Current job - $12.75/hour, no benefits. Temp job, and according to my "digging", no real chance to go perm. No benefits, but nice 9-5 schedule...probably will last at least 6 more months though. Very laid back, in other words - Cake.

Opportunity - Start as temp at $9/hour. Perm in 1-3 months @ $12.50/hour and excellent benefits. Health/dental, 401k with give 5% get 4% match and 15% stock discount purchase plan. Pay maxes out in around 2 years @ nearly $16/hour. Four ten hour shifts (11am-10pm), weekends off. Looks quite a bit more fast paced than current job - Much Less Cake.

Wild Card - is the manager lying to me and just wants temps to cut costs or will he "take care of me" and "make sure I go perm" if I am a hard worker?

I have to make my decision by today, and on top of it all I will be able to give my current employer virtually no notice...These temps never allow you to give notice if you have a job...

keep the job you have now, work on finding another one in a few months for backup =P

cake is better than "much less cake"

Other factor is what are the responsibilities/title of the first job as opposed to the second? Will it advance your career at all?

These are both warehouse jobs but...

First job is just easier - We supposed to stay until 5:30 and the boss typically cuts us loose @ 5:10-5:15 and still pays us the full amount. We seemingly never have to really rush to get all our work done. Along with the ideal hours it is less than 10 mins from my house despite traffic.

Second job - Manager was describing how you have to really keep the pace up and the pressure is on. I would start by putting mailing labels on packages, then move to driving the order picker. From my observations, I don't think it was anything I would have any trouble handling - Yet at the same time, it didn't appear like there is any room to mess around either.

So 1st job you can be a zombie at least 4 hours out of 8 - only the 3 hour packing stage requires high attention level. 2nd job seems like it would require constant awareness - not that there is anything wrong with that - but ya gotta love zombie 🙂

LOL - As long as you perform that cyborg operation as promised! Time is running out! Jet down here and implant that nuclear reactor in my heart! Must...not...sleep...!

Describe each job.

If manager is offering to make you permanent in that short of time, get it writing or get confirmation from someone in HR before you put in your two weeks notice.

One thing I have learned about promises, they are not worth sh1t. If they don;t want to put it in writing then chances are it will not happen.

Okay, in more detail -

Current job - Orders come off of a laser printer, seperated in stacks for each of us to go pick off of the shelves (approximately 6 of us, 3 temps). That lasts 1-1.5 hours, then 15 min break. We then pack for about 3 hours, then 30-45 minute lunch. Come back, unload incoming merchandise, usually done by 4 pm, then 15 minute break. Then BS around and try to find something to do like restock shelves until 5-5:15 then go home.

Other job - Stand in front of computerized mailing system weighing packages and preparing for shipping and palletizing. Drive Order Picker Forklift after few weeks, currently using a batch ordering system that is going to be revamped in the near future as it is old. Massive 100,000 square foot warehouse and the next one will be bigger (they are moving to new location in less than a year, also near me). Looked like orders flash in front of a dot-matrix like screen (on the picker) telling you what to pull with the order picker. Associates looked quite busy.

About getting the request in writing - These places view you as disposable (doesn't mean they won't make you perm, but still disposable). They will want to laugh at my "demands" for requesting something in writing. These warehouse jobs will just find someone else with a path of less resistance.

So that is a big part of my delimma - do I trust this guy? I am going to call the temp agency and ask them more about this company and if there is am minimum time until you become perm and look for signs of hesitation.

But I am going to tell this guy today that I am checking with my future school schedule to make sure it will be compatible and I will give final confirmation monday. I like the potential but this feels too shady without more solid advice. I want to ask some family members but the one I trust most is out of town...

I like the 2nd choice...Id rather be excelling at something than just coast by...why go to work for just the sake of being there when you can achieve something.

If someone can use the idea of going perm. to get you to ADJUST YOUR LIFE for them, if they can't put it in writing, then they are probably just out to screw you to begin with.

Disposable or not, if an employer won't stand behind what they tell you enough to put it in writing, then there are alterior motives.
