Job Opportunities

I am 18 years old and going through college trying to get my degree. I recently just got hired by Compusa in computer sales. When my commision starts to come in I will be making from $700 (probably higher around christmas) to $1000 every two weeks. I applied for a Canon representative position about four months ago and never heard a peep out of them till a couple days ago. A really nice lady called me and said she thought my resume was excellent and wanted to setup an interview. I asked her why they never called me earlier and she said something went wrong with the system. The pay for that position is $11 dollars an hour plus bonuses. It is only two, eight hour shifts every saturday and sunday. I won't have to deal with the sales pressure and I don't have any managers up on me. It also works well with my college schedule. I have the opportunity to make more money during peak sales seasons at Compusa, but after christmas everything is extremely slow until summer. What you think I should do?

Cliff Notes:
- Going through college
- Just got a job at Compusa paying from $700 to $1000 every 2 weeks
- A Canon representative job I applied for about 4 months ago just called and wants to setup interview
- The Canon job pays $11 plus bonuses and is only 2 days a week (works really good with college schedule)
- Canon representative job would be a breeze and no sales pressure.

IMO having been a Canon "representative" (whatever that is) would look 100x better on a resume than any sales position.

Not that much at all really. All the money I am making now is going to fun stuff/ savings account. I just pay for gas, parents pay the rest.

Retail electronics sales sucks so much balls. I've done both commissioned and hourly sales in retail. I got two things out of it:

1) Was able to hone my bullsh!tting skills to a dangerous level 😀
2) A rabid hate for the general public.

Go for the Canon job, trust me on this.

As a Canon representative you just basically hover near the canon products in a store and tell customers about them and persuade them to buy your product. I believe the bonuses are dealt by how much is sold in your store.

LOL I already have adopted those two traits. I was at Circuit City for a year before Compusa.

Eh. The Canon sounded like more of a corporate position. Since that's not the case it's really your call, but I'd still pick Canon over CrapUSA.

Haha, but seriously. Unless you can get into a place like Ultimate Electronics or some of the non-chain stores that pay major bank, the stress you'll get from working retail during the holidays just isn't worth it. At least it wasn't for me.

When holiday season came at Circuit City I just took the whole week off before christmas haha. I wouldn't want to do that now, considering I make commision, but yeah it will be crazy if I stay at compusa. Im going to have to think hard about this one.

The only christmas season I worked for Circuit was the last season before they switched commissioned to hourly. I made some serious money in those 3 months, but I can't count how many times I just wanted to punch customers and put a gun to my managers' heads. *shudder* Brings back bad memories. I'm sorry you had to work for Circuit as well, haha.

Atleast you were in the days of commision there. I got payed $9.50 an hour and got my a$$ b!tched at every time I would stop doing something, even though my numbers were good. Atleast at Compusa I get treated pretty good and the manager isn't on my nuts all the time, atleast not yet....

Yeah, I started hourly, $8.50, went to commission, then when they switched over they gave me $12/hr which supposedly was the cap(which I know for a fact it wasn't). I got fired from there because I wasn't selling service the right way. I was selling plenty of it, had better numbers than anyone else in my department, but I wasn't doing it "by the book" and they gave me the boot. They just wanted to replace me with two part-timers for the same price. Everyone I worked with was cool as hell, except management. I just couldn't comprehend how their management could be so incredibly sh!tty across the board.

Yeah the company is trying their best to get rid of anyone making over 11 an hour. We had three "old timers" who were making 20 bucks an hour and they were lazy as hell!!! I hope that company goes down the sh!tter, no one needs them. City advantage is worthless, I have heard them tell customers that a broken key on a laptop is consider just looks and is not covered under wear and tear.

 for you for surviving that hell hole, haha.

Because I've done both I'd say do the Canon rep position. I was a Lexmark rep in a Best Buy store. The Canon guy was bringing home like $1500 every two weeks! The good thing about the job was that you got to work in the Best Buy store but didn't have to really answer to any of their @sshole managers. Take the Canon job. You'll be far less stressed out.
