So.... Long story short I live in the DMV....

I have been with my consulting firm for about 10.3 years, its been a good ride, but I have a feeling it needs to come to an end, and here is why.

Background: My old direct boss that was in the leadership of the firm left last October, and ever since then its gone down hill from my perspective.
Pros:
I get 16.xx hours of leave a month, that includes sick and personal vacation.Which is a shitload IMO, unless you are federal govt worker.
I have great flexibility, if I need to work from home because my son is sick I can do so. I never get questioned about this kind of stuff, but then again I dont take advnatage of it either.
Cons: I get NO OT, and NO Comp time, there have been times that Ive had to work 14 hour days 4 days in a row on travel, yup I get paid for 8 hours
Cons: Benefits including Medical, and 401k have dropped.
Cons: My raise may be 1% in Jan

Fast Forward to last week, my old boss took a PM job at a defense contractor, and wants to bring me on board BAD to grow the business in that area that I am an expert at.

Pros: Working for my old boss again after I did that for 8+ years.
Pros: Lets me really do whatever I want
Pros: 25k more a year
Unknowns: Comp time ? OT Pay ? Medical/401k benefits package
Cons: Less Flexibility
Cons: Less leave, they only give you 3 weeks and 1 week is sick leave
Cons: Going back to my old client... Its sort of a good thing and bad thing..

As they say grass isnt always greener on the other side, but my old boss wants me some kind of bad, I bust my ass right now for my company which is a top consulting firm in the nation, and I have little to show for and its rather shitty LOL...

I will be 35 in 13 days so its also the timing, that I am in the middle of my career, and is this what I want to do for the rest of my career.

There is a big caveat to it all, the fed govt is trying to pick me up, but then again you know how long that takes, specifically DHS. Which I have an awesome rapport with the customer/client there. It would suck to give that opportunity up, but you know how that goes.

Anyone that has been in my shoes... Want to give me some suggestions/thoughts/guidance.

Thanks

How much of that $25k/yr does your current comp time eat into compared to the new comp time? Really eats into the compensation depending on your hourly rate. Overall it doesn't sound like a worthwhile jump, but it does sound like you should keep looking.

I make 6 figures, so to me a 25k jump is worth it as far as money aspect is concerned.

Find out about the comp time and OT stuff, then decide how much you value those.

Personally I wouldn't be able to stand working that kind of OT without getting paid for it, but you're not me. Also the kind of flexibility and time off that you have now is pretty valuable for anyone, but especially so with your family situation. Maybe the best option is to take a third option, one that also lets you work from home but has more growth potential.

Trust me it sucks I have 245k SWA points just this year........that should tell you a lot lol. The flexibility is great for me and the farm that's true.

I'm waiting to hear more info tomorrow.

There isn't a 3rd option yet lol

i'd just see how much you are worth hourly at #1, then find out how much you are worth at #2 hourly, and then see how much that less PTO time at the first company is actually worth. then you can see exactly how much that $25k is actually worth.

additionally, you should find out how much the insurance is going to cost you. that can be thousands of dollars worth of compensation.

if it were me, i'd go with #2 most likely even with what you described. IMO, being with a company for 10+ years that early in your career isn't the best path to take. i know it varies per field/company, but with a new company you will probably gain more knowledge and learn more rather than staying with the same one. also, $25k when already making a comfortable salary over 6 figures makes a HUGE difference. at that point it kind of just becomes fun money and can bring a lot of happiness. all of the "extra" money my wife and i make we typically spend on traveling or home renovations, and we've enjoyed every penny spent on it.

in my personal situation, i was at my first job out of school 5+ years. i'm now 10+ years in my career and working in the same area as my first job, and i go to lunch with guys who started with me at the first job. those guys haven't learned ANYTHING new since il eft and are still doing the same stuff. i bet their pay has hardly grown either. i'm making more than double what i was making at that place 6 years later, and i'm WAY more marketable than they are.

me personally, i would never work more than 40 hours and not get paid for it. a previous company tried to do that, but at least they gave us comp time, but at that point i knew that meant that company had piss poor management so i started looking for a new job and found a much better job.

oh, and after working with govies the past 5 years with 2 different companies and 2 different branches, i'd never want to be a government employee lol. they are pretty worthless for the most part.

fwiw, i'm also in the DMV area.

If I had a $25k raise sitting on the table from another job, I'd take it in a heartbeat!
