I am considering a job don't have an offer yet but I might be close. This position is available in many locations. I don't know if salary differs by location, but let's assume it does.

So I just want to know from you guys, which location would your prefer and why?

<-- From Ohio BTW.

Not California. Out of the question (except maybe a couple more out of the way locations).

I don't think I'd go to Hillsboro, though it's a sort of nice place. If I wanted to be on the west coast and that and California were my only options, I'd pick that.

Phoenix - interesting opportunity, great country down there. But then again, I'd be more inclined not to want to work once down there.

Austin - It's Texas. It's Austin. Some good jobs down there, but I'd rather be around DFW.

If it were up to me, Phoenix first, Hillsboro next.

I voted Oregon.

I grew up there (Portland, specifically) and have always wanted to move back... if my company opened up an office there (which we'd never do, but in theory), I'd ask for a transfer tomorrow.

Any of these places pretty much sucks to be at per se?

And what is it about Hillsboro that is getting it more votes? Is it the scenery and natural beauty?

How is life in that area? Slow pace, relaxed?

I prefer Northern regions over Southern for climate and seasons. I think I'd prefer Oregon over California (never been to Oregon, have lived in SoCal). Decent proximity to Mt. Hood too. Although I've heard the rain is murder...I like overcast more than uber-sunny (of which we have plenty in Denver).

Working for Intel it would seem.

I voted Austin.

I have lived in Portland (Hillboro), Sacramento ( Folsom), and currently reside in Santa Clara.

Portland - too much wet, too many hippies, too many unemployed, too liberal. Hillsboro is also 30-minutes from Portland.

Folsom - too much central valley smog. Too much taxes being in Cali. Pluses are Tahoe is 90-minutes, and Summer fun on the rivers & lakes is fun. 2hrs to San Frna bay area oceans as well.

Santa Clara - too much taxes, not enough single women, too much diversity, too much congestion, high cost of living. Pluses include beautiful weather year around and ocean access is close with Tahoe 4hrs away for skiing. Lots of great ethnic food.

Austin - been there twice. I like Texas. People are friendly, weather is too hot, ocean only 6hrs or so away, cheap cost of living, cute white girls, good Tex Mex & BBQ, favorable tax structure.

What about economic stability? Which city would you say would be more stable than all the others?

Anywhere in Texas - while I'd love to live in northern Cali or Oregon, no state tax is a big decision there.

Silicon Valley is an awesome place to network with your fellow techies and if you are decent you will alwaysh ave a job in this area due to so many start-ups and VC money. Lots of diveristy of jobs with all ranges of tech being represenmted here. (Software, Storage, Life Science, Green/Clean Tech, Internet, Multimedia, Video Games, Semiconductor, Networking).

Economic stability of California blows with the steadily rising tax rates and increasing energy costs.

Austin, easily. Corporations are moving there or setting up shop, and the housing market hasn't experienced a crash - more of a growth actually.

Austin is truly the best viable choice. Forget Phoneix..fucking dump. Cali...you will be overtaxed and poor and in traffic all the fucking time. Oregon..beautiful but dreary way too much...

Austin..college town..so so many Texas hotties. Area is great, not like a desert..some trees river, hills.. No state tax...great food...MUSIC and entertainment....

No brainer...TEXAS!

Good luck.

isn't there also no state income tax in TX? that could be a factor assuming equal pay no matter where you go.

Hillsboro > Austin

I lived in both, trust me.
The only bad thing about Oregon was its liquor laws. State run liquor stores suck.

No state income tax, but they hit you pretty hard on property taxes.

Darn it, I was going to answer both Austin and Hillsboro as my options I accidentally just said Austin and sent that as my response.

I like Austin's relative proximity to Ohio and the promising opportunities whilst I found Oregon's nature very appealing as well. Oh well, if this ever materializes into an offer, I will see what can be done then.
