Job Interview Question

This is the question that always gets me, because I haven't been doing anything...and the most common answer I've been getting from interviewers is that I've been out of the job market for too long..it'll be 2 year this upcoming October.

What are some good answers I can give to this question?...I know they want to hear that I've been productive in regards to the related field, but I haven't. During that time I've taken a year off as well as been doing family stuff, but I know they don't want to hear that.

Well, what have you been doing? Searching for another job? Making yourself better by attending classes? Sitting on your ass all day? You need to give them a semi-honest answer that makes it seem like you weren't just wasting your time; you were doing something productive with your life over 2 years, or had personal family issues to take care of.

Just say you do self-study and mention what kind of study you did.

For me, I told them that I did some self-study and doing some side projects of my own. oh, I was looking for software programming positions back then if you wonder what kind of side projects I'm doing.

Edit: I was "on the bench" for 6 weeks in 2000 and that was good for about 20 levels.

You were unable to leave your house to go to a job interview because you didn't have any pants. You thought about buying some more pants during that time, but you didn't have any pants to wear to the store to buy more pants!

Oh, and make sure you don't wear any pants to the job interview.

I was kind of in a similar position in my life. My parents wanted me to help out in their restaurant instead of working in school or some other job. They thought they were doing me a favor because I would have more time to study. But all it did was lower my self esteem to the point where it would take a miracle for me to get out of the vicious downward spiral.

What have you been doing? You'd be suprised at how many employers just like to hear the truth. If its something family related, just say it without getting into too much detail. Did you have to take care of family member? "I took care of a loved one for a period of time"

Also, change the topic at the end of whatever your reply is or switch it to a different direction. Make sure you mention how eager you are to get back in the job market and how confident you are that you can pick up where you left off.
