Job interview phone call follow up, what to say?

Two days ago a recuiter called me to conduct a phone interview. At the end he said he had to "discuss it with the hiring manager" (yea right), and would get back to me. I want to follow up with phone call, but I'm not sure what to say. This wasn't a formal in person interview, so no decision was going to be made. This was a first phone interview to see if they even want to interview me in person. Should I even follow up with a call, should I do it today, and what should I ask? I don't want to sound pushy, but I want to let them know I'm interested in the job.

Job interviews in this area are few and far between, so I'm not just giving up on a position without knowing for sure I'm not getting it.

I agree you shouldn't give up until they tell you why they're turning you down ... did you ask how long before they'll get back to you? Usually it's a week ...
If you are going to call just let them you're still interseted in the job and was wondering if they've made any decisions. Just be ready to for an impromptu interview right there and then just in case you're one of the borderline folks.

Just calling to find out the status. Every book and job interview tip site I've read recommends following up with a phone call.

Usually it's best to follow up with a letter. But anyway I'd just say something like "Thank for taking the time to speak with me about the position you have open. It sounds like a great match for my skills and I am looking forward to hearing back from you to schedule an in-person interview. If you have any other questions for me, please let me know."

sounds like maybe you state that you are following up on the interview you had two days ago to see if they have made any decisions.

sounds simple enough, good luck!

It'll have to be a call. The person I talked to was a recruiter that works remotely from the office, so I have no address for him.
