i just got info that i will be interviewed for a pretty important job with the goverment. I have never been interviewed into a 'serious' job before, what do i need to know, and how should i parpare for this? I don't want to give the interviewer a bad impression of me. Some times i get nervous in situations similar to this, how can i over come this. please help meee...

You can start off by dressing nicely. Suit 🙂

Edit
It must be a Friday my grammar is atrocious.

I always try to make eye contact with my interviewer when listening and trying to answer their questions. If its more than one interviewer I shift contact with whomever is talking.

List of things to do.

1) A suit. Wear one if they even say business casual. It says "I mean business"
2) A confident smile on your face. This makes a good first impression.
3) Firm handshake
4) Good posture. Your hand should be on the table, and DO NOT PLAY WITH YOUR THUMBS.
5) Before the interview begins and while the person is getting ready, say things like "Wonderful day outside". Just positive things.
6) During the interview, make eye contact all the time. Even if that person isn't looking, keep looking in that direction.
7) No umm.. yeah.. ehh.. If you don't know what to say, just pause.
8) If you need time to think, say "Give me sometime to think this over".
9) in the end ask questions about the company, job, and related things.

All these recommendations are good, but, ultimately it comes down to your qualifications. Interviewers (and I've done a couple, interesting sitting on the otherside..) can spot BS a mile away. If they've called you in, then you obviously have some qualifications. Important thing to do (and many times difficult) is to recognize these yourself and then be able to demonstrate them confidently. No amount of schmoozing will get you the job if you are an idiot (unless they themselves are idiots, but thats a diff story.)

Be genuine and self-aware. These people are looking for the right tool for a job. Prove that you are this, and present your best side, but DON"T exaggerate your qualities to make yourself look better. People are smart and you WILL get caught, and will only end up looking like an asshat, they will then wonder about ALL the things you've claimed, and you will be the first to be eliminated.

but in the end, don't be nervous. If you are right, you are right. If not, there will be another job that will be.

Good luck.
