Job ideas for a college student who needs money...

Hey all -

I figure enough people have been in my position that asking might actually give me some ideas on what I can do. I'm a full time college student and could definitely use some money -- a) got a wonderful girlfriend I like to spoil, and b) I have those expensive techie tastes...

I'm an experienced programmer (interned with Microsoft last summer -- talk about spoiling 🙂 (And now I wear a t-shirt from Linux Journal to ever MS even I go to... I'm such a rebel ;-) )) and could get wonderful recommendations from my professors if it came to that. I'm a computer engineering major, so working with people -- while I can -- is not my forte.

And I have a tendency to look in the $15+/hour range... So I think I might be aiming too high...

Where should I look? Labs? "Real" jobs?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!
Andrew

urgh, some college graduates don't even make that much. Unless you have mad skillz.

Get a job where you can have fun and make some money. You will have plenty of time to worry about "real" jobs after you graduate.

Some suggestions:
1. Work in a bar
2. Male Prostitute
3. Dealer(I'm not talking blackjack)
4. Pimp
5. Male Stripper
6. Beat up the nerdy kids for their tuition $

Hmm... $15 ain't that bad. I haven't graduated yet (can't afford to finish school right now, and this silly US Education policy of not crediting subjects/classes taken from a different country). I earn just a coupla dollars more than that/hr.

Just a thought.

Of course I got mad skillz. I'm an Anandtech Member, ain't I?

$15 is low for programming if you can prove you can do it... And I can prove that. My only problem is a part time 3 month job SCREAMS contract work, and I don't have that kind of reference, so I'm looking towards doing something a bit more... commonplace?

Aside from the mugging rich kids for their tuition $$$, I ain't seen nothing yet that I would enjoy doing... 😉

Anyone else got anything for me?
Andrew

most of us college kids are like that 🙂

If you could give me a bit more info.

1) Where are you?

2) Do you mind physical labor?

3) Are you looking for part time off hours kinda work?

dude, where are you? Cuz here in L.A. you'd definitely make more money than that.

Lost of schools have partnerships with Jobtrak, and list jobs and internships on there. I've definitely seen alot of good jobs on there. Found my most recent one there.

Jobtrak.com

late.

lab rat is always popular around here, PPD Pharmaco is always looking for victims, I mean... qualified test subjects. 🙂 But seriously... what area are you in? How metro?

Depending on the tech market in your area, you shouldnt have any trouble finding a job. Can you get contacts through your career center? I'm sure there are companies looking to hire talented programmers on a part time basis. $15/hr should be easy to find, of course it depends where you live. However it depends on how much money you really want, you could probably find a lab job that pays you 8-10/hr but you probably dont have to do anything for most of the time. Some people would prefer that type of job as opposed to getting more money.

I'm currently in Boston, at BU (We'll kick your @ss in hockey... even if we don't have a football team...).

Definitely looking for part time work -- if it's something that can be done in the REALLY off hours (I'd rather work 2am than 2pm) and particularly at home, I'd be even happier.

But hey, who am I deluding? 🙂

Andrew

Far as I've seen, the career center here is lousy... they charge you a grand+ to help arrange an internship.

*shrug* there's always a Fraunhofer Institute presence on campus I could work at, but one of my best friends just applied over there and was turned down for engineering... but was offered a job as tech support. I don't want to take her job... I'd feel bad!

I'm in college and I got a job at shopko for $5.50 an hour

WHOOO BABY!!! 5.50!!!!

Also selling plasma will get you up to 200 bucks a month in some areas! And to boot you can get buzzed up off half as much booze! its a win win situation.
