Job Hunting...

Anybody have any detailed experience with this? I have my resume in proper order now, I am definately ready to make a move, now the question remains -- how to apply?

I am doing the normal stuff and going thru Monster.com/CareerBuilder/Dice/Hotjobs etc, finding positions, customizing a cover letter and sending my resumes out, but I'm not getting any returns and if I am, they are usually from headhunters with emails saying "Are you qualified for XXX position?" which is usually something too much for me to handle, or too little for me to accept.

I am wondering if there are any better methods or to just keep plugging along as time goes by. The work environment here is getting worse because the CFO is going on a rampage and wants to control everything and people are leaving en masse. I don't want to miss the boat either... it's too much to handle now.

Any help is appreciated. Once I get to the interview stage, I usually do just fine. It's just getting to that point that I need a bit of help with.

Talk to people you know. I've gotten almost every job I've ever had from networking with people and getting reccomendations.

Oh believe me, I'm trying. My networking skills are limited in this regard however, because most of my friends are *not* in the tech industry and don't know people who are. Granted I have a few applications out and about with friends but I can't put 100% faith in getting those positions either.

I just want to get the broadest and best opportunity range I can get, in addition to whatever networking I can manage.

Your friends may know people, and those people may know other people.

How long has it been since you sent the resumes out? I wouldn't be too down if its only been a short while. It took me about 6 months to snatch up my current job and that was after about dozen interviews froma few hundred resumes sent out, heh.

i got my current job through tbo.com with is the tampa bay newspaper site, but i also sent in a few resumes for a new IT position yesterday and they want me to come in for a workshop, but wtf the workshop is everyday 2:30-4:30(mon-fri)...."hey boss im going to take a few hours off today and go check out another job b/c working here is boring"

Anyways yea all those sites you listed are good, but in the end its all about who you know.

Definately network with people you know. (How I got my current job)

As far as the job hunting sites went...I seemed to have more success getting interviews if I looked for companies that had jobs listed there, then going to the company site and applying directly.

NY Times, that's a good idea too. I will start picking it up. As I understand, the Sunday paper is the one to get with the big job listings?

Thanks! :)

Times is good, too. Or you can go to their official website and click on their Job market link to take you to the listings. If you're in a technical field, Dice.com is an excellent depot of jobs as well.

Go to networking events and meetings. They should be in your local papers business section. Doesn't even have to be in your field, just go to places where business leaders are.
