I've determined it's all about contacts, who you know, and who you blow.

I've also determined that I have no contacts, I know noone, and my wife isn't going to help me find a job. :D

Everyone says it's about contacts but it's not at all...

In fact, most new grads don't ever get jobs because of networking...

Good jobs are scare right now. You have to keep trying until you find one. Don't forget the rules guys/gals: Network, Good resume, Good interview skills, Positive "Can Do" attitude.

Unfortunately my days our numbered at my current job. Our department is relocating to the East Coast (currently live in the Midwest).

Just the thought of looking for a job again makes me *shudder*.

Yes it is long and painful. Most jobs are *not* advertised outside the company. So all the unemployes are applying for the same few select jobs. However, once you start working you make contacts and it's easier to get that second job. In my case, I have been back in school for over 2 years so I have to start the process all over again.

Contacts don't always guarantee a job, but it sure does help. People who say that contacts don't do any thing are naive. Hate to say it, but it is about who you know more than what you know.

Who you know is VERY important when searching for a job. On average, someone (a new grad or experienced individual) will have a more difficult time finding a job than having someone refer you. When you're applying for a job without a contact, you're one of hundreds who apply for that one position. Other than your resume, there are no easy way of standing out from all the other applicants. If someone refers you, you have his or her word that he or she knows someone who is capable of working that position. I know I wouldn't refer my friends if I didn't think they were capable because it could come back to bite you in the a$$.

I've known many idiots that have found a job before those that truly deserved one -- and that's me included. :D
