I accepted a job offer a couple weeks ago and I start next Wednesday. This is a mediocre job that also pays below my expectations. I don't believe I have a future at this company. I accepted in fear that I might not find anything else for a while (and still might not) since I've been unemployed for 7 months already.

Today, I was contacted by a company that matches my interests much more and I do believe I have a future at this company. Unfortunately I missed the call and I left a message but I assume I was contacted to schedule an interview. Salary wasn't in the job description but I'm certain it's more than the job I've accepted already.

So assuming that I can get an interview on Friday or soon, what are my options? What would you do? I haven't signed anything. I might be able to extend my start date with some sort of excuse so that I have more time to hear back from the other company.

Best is to extend the start date because even if you have the interview this Friday and if they like you, they will bring you back for another interview next week. If all goes well on your 2nd interview, you will not hear from them until Thursday/Friday of next week.

So that brings me to another question. Whats a good legitimate excuse? They're having me start on the 17th because someone else is also starting on the 17th.

The call could have been for a phone screening. Which means you wait 1-2 weeks for a 1st interview, and another 1-2 weeks for the 2nd interview. Call them back and explain your situation.

I wouldn't say anything. Start the new job like nothing has changed. If you get the better job, take it. The first company wouldn't hesitate to fire you if they thought it would help them, don't hesitate to leave. You don't owe them ANYTHING.

As much as I'd like to approach this as two separate situations, they coincide. I have two concerns.

1) If I get past the 1st interview and onto the 2nd one, I'd most certainly be working already. How am I going to request a day off already within 2 weeks of starting?

2) I'm not sure about any papers I'd need to sign on my first day. Is it typical for an employer come up with some kind of contract stating I need to work at their company for the first few months?

This is my first FT job out of college. I'm clueless.

dont assume you'll get a second interview. dont do anything to screw up the job in hand. phone interviews you can easily schedule and get done. if you make it far enough to dictate an in person interview, you can always play the sick card or after you've been there a week, have a better idea on how to approach it.
employers usually dont have a contract that states you have to work x number of months. they might have you sign something that says you're on probation the first few months and they have the right to axe you during that period of time. or a bonus clause that says you have to repay any sign on bonuses or whatnot if you leave in x timeframe.
