So I was listening to NPRs coverage of the delphi thing and they had an interview with a guy that was currently in a job bank. Apparently this man was taking classes at community college (paid for gm) AND receiving his wage even though he wasn't working.

Let me get this straight - UAW convinced GM that employess that are NOT working will be getting free education AND get paid ?? Am I missing something?

The guy is an apprentice. You get paid to train until you become a journeyman.

there was a big thread about this
they get paid to sit in a room and read or sleep or whatever, they just have to be there to get paid
they don't do any work

it has been in place since the mid-1980s

yeap they are not getting paid to go to school. thats just one of the choices. as for why GM agreed to it? easy the UAW had them by the balls.

unfortunately the UAW was so greedy and shortsighted they are in a mess now.

..is GM the only one doing this?? No wonder there's so much sticker shock on their vehicles.

Basically, according to the deal they struck with the UAW, GM can furlough the employee - they don't work but still get paid for something like up to 18 months. Its insane. really.

Thats one of their "benefits" - if I were him, I'd study up, take the 18 months, eventuallly get laid off and then move somewhere else.
