I was thinking about filling out this job application and noticed it said "desired salary." I was wondering what you would put yourself? Would you low-ball it in hopes of getting the job or go higher than you expect and hope that maybe they will go down a little, but it will be what you like or maybe they will think that you're asking too much?

Could it be used as a measure of confidence? If so, maybe a little higher than what you want

depends on how desperate am I. If I already have a job, then I would put it higher than what I make now. If I have no job then I would go as low as I could reasonably live off.

I always put $1 million.

That way they'll either think I'm funny and laugh or give me a million dollars. I can't lose!

Third option: They'll think you're an idiot who isn't taking the application seriously and would probably be better off with some McJob where your 'humor' can be appreciated.

You're right. They'll probably hire someone that takes internet forum posts (especially ones as silly as that one) seriously instead. :(

That was a joke? Wow...

You should work on that and I expect to see improvement by the next time you post one. If you'd like you can PM me them before you put them up and I'll grade them.

Who's flaming? I'm just trying to help you fix your sarcasm meter.

He's right you know. I thought it was pretty obvious that he wasn't being serious...but you started acting like a moron and then you just kept digging the hole instead of saying 'my bad'.

What should I say 'my bad' about? He came out calling me an idiot for making a dumb joke. I guess it's safe to assume that neither one of you are ever guilty of that.

put negotiable, it's better to get a chance to ask the interviewer or possibly an employee about salaries. do some research so that even if they deny to answer the question of salary, you can quote a salary range (range is better, start with minimum you'd expect. range up to $5K more for most positions) also don't forget to ask about benefits and such.

i find it annoying when people put "negotiable" down.. When they do that it feels like they're just dodging the question. If people put a figure that's way too high we won't even consider them since they'll probably be high maintanence (I need this.. I need that.. I'm better than you!). I don't think I've ever seen an application that low balled the salary.. :)
