So after finishing Jedi Knight 2 I thought I'd peruse the manual a little bit and see if it had any info on creating mods. I caught this little tidbit at the very end of the software license (last page 49 of manual):

By distributing or permitting the distrubtion of any MODs, all creators or owners of any trademark, copyright, or other right, title or interest therin grant to LEC an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free,sublicensable right to distrubte the MOD by any means(whether now known or hereafter invented), and to create and distrubte by any means (whether now or hereafter invented) derivative works thereof, and to charge for the distrubtion of such MOD or such derivative work, with no obligation to account to any creators or owners of the MOD in any manner.

So basically if you create a kickass mod, Lucas Art can decide to start charging for it and you won't see a dime. I think they've fallen to the Dark Side.

Just because they put that in there doesn't make it legal for them to do so :)

Not that I'm saying it would be illegal for them to do whatever they want. I don't know of any like that ever being done. Would be real interesting to see how it would go in a court.

Lucas is such an ass. Not the first time I've seen something like this in regards to him. Everyone should be like Garriot :) He said folks could work on his Ultima series as long as they didn't try to make money off of it (like the remake of Ultima 1 a group is doing).

Protection...get the full grasp of that word and you will understand why that clause is necessary.

this clause has been in every game since modding came along... nothing new...

the boys who made counterstrike are lucky sierra decided to be so nice and share some of the wealth when they put it on cd...

I think its a gray area. They usually will buy out the rights from the mod group to play it safe if the plan on redistributing it. Like Sierra did counterstrike.

part of making a kickass mod is making updates to it such as the counter-strike boys have done for so long... if Lucas Arts decided to treat an excellent mod creator unfairly i'm sure the gaming community would raise hell and boycott the game or whatever. I know I would.
