The eSports Community Is,...

  • Just fine.

  • Just fine. Now, go get raped with a rusty pole and die of AIDS while I do your mother.

  • Rotten and awful.

  • It's just a few bad apples.

  • I am a raging moron.

Eh, I don't really agree with the thing about women. While it is far easier to get a guy to click on a thumbnail for a stream when it shows a hot chick, you won't necessarily retain them past the usual "Show your tits!" or "Bobs or rito!" (The way Twitch dumbs down words just astounds me at times) comment unless you're interesting.

I've seen plenty women streaming, begging for handouts in games like D3 and such. They generally have a bunch of white knights, white knighting to clean up the morons, but people still eat that idiot give girls stuff BS.

it has been toned down as Twitch has released rules on what streamers are allowed to wear on stream (no bikini tops / shirtless for men, no excessive cleavage, etc). It has helped remove a lot of those, and the girls that are still big streamers are more interesting, but there is still the occasional "I'm a pretty girl, help me in this game" garbage.

Jimmy Kimmel questioned/joked about people watching others play video games on his show one night.

Here is the clip/skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji9KmXwrA5Y

Some video game/e"sports" watchers then mocked him back - which was fine frankly. But, a few lost their shit, by:
- threatening to kill him
- threatening to kill his family
- wishing death on him
- wishing diseases on him

This video hit nearly 60K thumbs down.

Then Kimmel responds like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZJHhM5uKlg which, as of this posting resulted in 10K thumbs down (v. 4K thumbs up).

Watching someone play video games is just fine.

However, when someone mocks you, take it as a joke, not an assault on your passion.

The majority of the responses to Kimmel are quite telling and in line with the usual shit that comes out from the gamer cesspool when outraged - rape threats, death threats, neckbeard rage, etc. So, this reaction isn't anything new and rather unfortunate. Unfortunate, since video gamers who compete consider themselves better than actual athletes; athletes are bullies and mean people, where as video gamers are meek and nice guys.

It boils down to the rotten side of human nature. But, are these buffoons THAT oblivious to their own behavior?

WHAT SAY YOU?!

Athletes are bullies and mean people, yet these 110lb pipsqueaks are making death threats. Everyone wants to be a tough guy and it's easier to do hiding behind a screen. Esports is just an alternative way for un-athletic kids to feel good about themselves. In the end, I'd rather be good at something than nothing. However, I'd rather be physically stronger than above average than prove I can push a button 1/10 of a second faster than my neighbor. But to each their own. The bottom line is that nerds will always be picked on for being physically weaker, it's just how we evolved. Kimmel mocking them is nothing new, esport gamers make up 2% or less of the population so it's an easy target.

Meh, in the end, both are getting paid money to play a game. One is a physical game, one is a virtual game. Let's add games of chance to the mix with Poker and how big that is/was for a while.

In the end, copulating with a real woman and masturbating in your hand are both "having sex". One is a fully immersive sensory experience, one is an act of boredom.

Some of the outrage in this thread reminds me of this...

no way i can watch things like a single player walkthrough of uncharted, tomb raider, etc.

but i'm a big fan of watching fighting game tournaments. it's like watching sports in the sense that you are watching people at the top of the top level competing in something you enjoy to do. and the fighting game community has grown big time in the past decade thanks to street fighter 4 reviving the whole scene that died (for the most part) with arcades.

i can only watch fighting games that i enjoy playing myself though, for the most part. there are a lot of fighting games that i don't find enjoyable to watch, but i also don't have any desire to play them.

I have no appeal toward competitive gaming other than to play games socially with other people. Sometimes competitive games no less - genres of choice are usually FPS or MMORPGs where some PvP is involved, I suck at both. But I do it to have fun and be engaged.

I have watched streams from other players, usually people I know, a couple times. But I've done so for specific reasons. Usually to learn something, typically watching a guild run through a particular MMO dungeon so I could understand the basic dungeon mechanics for when I do the run. Makes life a little easier on the group when they don't have to explain it to 10 people a dozen times and things go quicker which for me and my limited play time is a godsend.

Do I watch eSports? Nope. I have no desire to, just like I have no desire to watch golf, tennis, or most other sports. Why? Like Jimmy Kimmel said: "Why would you watch when you could do." The only sport I like to watch is football, but honestly I'd rather play it if I could. Honestly though it's not something I have the capacity to play, but I do enjoy sitting back with a cold drink on the couch and watching the brutal destruction of brain cells.

Other than that, for people that enjoy watching eSports, cool. It really is no different than watching any other sporting event. I can see the appeal.

I think it's pretty safe to say that any competitive activity you enjoy you can also enjoy watching other people do, provided they are good at it. It's really not any different from regular sports on that level, notions of being "one more step removed from genuine human interaction" notwithstanding.

I think watching people play games is dumb as hell, but then again so is watching people play sports which are also just games.

I love games personally but I have zero desire to watch someone else play them.

Poker involves more risk than a video game - there is a crap load of money to be lost; your own.

Fighting game tourneys are paid out based on the people playing paying an entry fee, so if you don't win you lose money.

There are additional pot bonuses sometimes though.
