I just saw a KFC commercial with Jim Gaffigan as the Colonel. I wonder if people hated Norm McDonald in the role as much as they disliked smarmy Darrell Hammond.

I liked Norm a lot better than Gaffigan. I like Gaffigan but the voice he's using is just grating

So this is the third Colonel Sanders they've had on the commercials. They obviously don't want to stick with just one.

The planned on rotating people regularly. It's part of the whole advertising campaign.
Though I don't understand why they are doing it...

I never knew that Darrel Hammond did these. I like Norm McDonald, but all of those ads are incredibly stupid. I don't understand what they are trying to do with them.

They both suck. Norm as the Colonel was a joke. It was funny for a while. This guy, though? He's just not believable.

Inconceivable. Norm McDonald is one of the top ten naturally funny guys to come out of SNL. His Weekend Update was a close second to Dennis Miller.

This is shocking to hear. IMHO MacDonald was one of the worst SNL players of anyone who was on the show more than a couple of years.

I think Norm was always funny, but he wasn't quite as memorable as others on the show (meaning I don't recall too many of his reappearing characters as you would someone like Dana Carvey) What made Norm funny was his personality and the dry wit approach.

Him playing Burt Reynolds on celebrity jeopardy was probably one of the best examples of his joke delivery because he didn't really crack a smile. He talks kind of fast and keeps a straight face... A lot of that humor is funny, but it doesn't always age well. It's like going back and watching old episodes of Beavis and Butthead...they aren't as funny as you remember them.

Maybe this was why I liked him. Nothing pulls me out of a skit or routine faster than someone cracking up at their own jokes. Jimmy Fallon being one of the worst offenders.

Phil Hartman was another one who wouldn't break character no matter how outrageous it got.

In a way, though...he's kinda right. I loved Norm well before SNL and was really excited to see him join, but then after a season, you realize he isn't exactly the SNL type. I like a lot of his stuff on there--I thought his weekend update was uncomfortably brilliant, but certainly polarizing for that type of audience--but it was pretty clear that he never was the improv type of actor that SNL demands (compare to Hammond or Hartman or even Wigg).

I mean, I really like Norm, but if he's arguing that he was bad from an SNL perspective, I see what he means....even though I personally disagree. Those specific years were pretty weak overall, so at least Norm provided something different. (Hell, didn't Chris Elliot and Mark McKinney show up at the same time? Both are and were great in other venues....but holy shit they were terrible on SNL)
