Former SC Senator, now head of Heritage, says that the federal govt didn't end slavery-

Well the reason that the slaves were eventually freed was the Constitution, it was like the conscience of the American people. Unfortunately there were some court decisions like Dred Scott and others that defined some people as property, but the Constitution kept calling us back to ‘all men are created equal and we have inalienable rights’ in the minds of God. But a lot of the move to free the slaves came from the people, it did not come from the federal government. It came from a growing movement among the people, particularly people of faith, that this was wrong. People like Wilberforce who persisted for years because of his faith and because of his love for people. So no liberal is going to win a debate that big government freed the slaves. In fact, it was Abraham Lincoln, the very first Republican, who took this on as a cause and a lot of it was based on a love in his heart that comes from God.

Nevermind that the Constitution of the time sanctified slavery, or that Lincoln's implement to end slavery was the Union Army.

It's what Conservatives call "leadership", I suppose.
 
This is what has become of the conservative movement's most prestigious policy organization. That's just how deep the rot has become in the American right.

I'm sure the conservatives back in those days just loved Lincoln.... they loved him so much they decided to break away from the union to show him their love.
 
Your natural condition is slavery if you cant be freed without force being initiated. "Freedom" gained through initiation of aggression is artificial freedom.

There was a good article that I can't find that details how Heritage courted some tea party idiots and eventually lost control when Frankenstein's monster escaped its shackles and took off towards the village.

Not even our resident mental cases are willing to defend this guys comments. Not even our resident right wing nuts are willing to step in this thread. Is it because they know what he said was stupid or is it because they don't want to believe one of their herders said something stupid and they think if they just ignore it their bubble will remain intact?

Stupid things said at a national level are usually not given the same weight as stupid things said at the local level. It's kind of amusing that the idiotic racist comments said by Alvin Holmes are getting so much more press than the women's rights attacking legislation that Alabama is trying to pass that Holmes' stupid adoption comments were in response to.

They're letting Heritage do the talking, assert those values. Here, one of their mouthpieces asserts that gay marriage is "bought for on the backs of the poor", so we should repeal the death tax-

America was the only one to end Slavery with blood, were we not?

As for his commentary, clearly the Civil War proves that line wrong. That the Feds DID end slavery. Rest of his commentary is accurate, you just harp on and attack a snippet which does not fit. I'd ask the Senator to explain himself. We might even agree on that.
