Cheap peanut butter is crappy food, now slightly better since trans fats are clamped down on (but not totally banned due to the "serving size cheat").

Just checked at Costco and they have a notice to throw the peanut butter away and go to Costco for a full cash refund.

If I live I will get a refund!

I just bought two 40 oz jars from Amazon 10 days ago, and an automated email I received from them just says to refer to the FDA announcement, which states to throw it away.

I also checked Jif's website also states to throw it away, with nothing mentioned about receiving a refund.

I get things like this happen from time to time, but in the past retailers would say return product for refund.

While writing the above info, I figured why not submit a return request from Amazon even though their email didn't mention that option at all. So after doing that, the automated message said a refund would be issued to my payment method, and that I did not need return the product.

I have a couple of big tubs purchased from costco and got an automated voice call yesterday from them. We only use the Jif for the dogs so we're not worried about it.

Still wouldn't want the dogs to get sick. I wonder if you could heat treat the peanutbutter to kill the salmonella? Mouth feel and extraneous stuff isn't as important to a dog's palate.

My wife bought 5 28oz. jars in Feb. because they were on sale. She already ate over one and half of them, and they are from the recalled list. She never got sick. Miejers better take them back at $4 a jar (you can download reciepts on M-perks). This is the first recall I've seen that says to throw the food away.

Same here.... AND I ate a little bit last week then felt vaguely sick to my stomach for a few days!



Worst part is that Stop & Shop had the 15.5 oz no added sugar creamy JIF for $1.40 per jar a couple weeks ago so I stocked up!

I wonder if you could heat treat the peanut butter to kill the salmonella?

From what I've read it takes close to 200f for around 45 minutes to kill salmonella in peanut butter. (this is for straight PB)

In cooking I'd say that it would depend on what you'll be using it in.... if its something that will boil for a long time (for example) I'd guess you would be fine but I'm not going to be the first to try!

Fortunately Stop & Shop (local chain) won't give any trouble on the refund even without a paper receipt... the "upside" of tracking everything you buy I suppose?

The thing that's bumming me out is that I got a ton of PB for cheap and won't be able to replace it for the $7 and change I'll be getting back. (around 5lbs total)

Always hated brand peanut butters...probably because the then veggie oils were going rancid by the time the donation food was taken into the house by my mom.

Stopped by the store today (Publix) to kill a little time while waiting for an adjustment at the chiropractor, and they had buy 1, get 1 free on Peter Pan 40 oz peanut butter, so got two of those for $6.50.

I really figured peanut butter section would have been empty from all the people who had to throw away their recalled Jif.
