The whole American Royalty / last gunslinger allure? I don't really get it either, after reading up on some of the Kennedy family escapades.

because he was killed?

Because he was the President of the United States Of America.

And he was not wimpy.

How can you not like a Man that had a Beautiful movie star sing
Happy Birthday Mr President. {Marilyn Monroe}

He had a lot of great ideas, and was killed before some of them really
got started;some of them President Lyndon Johnson followed thru with.

Still, he did nothing positive, even if he had those ideas, they never came true, so I don't give him any credit for any of it. He was ugly and hunchbacked too.

Because he was young, good looking and charismatic. Of course he was nothing else without daddy Joe there to pull the strings.

He represented something like a "youth movement" to people, he was young, handsome and had a pretty wife and attractive family. I think he represented hope to blacks and other minorities and he presented himself as an invigorating leader.
One of the reasons he is remembered so positivly now was his unfulfilled legacy, when people think of him they think of what his triumphs would have been rather than his failures.

He was "hunchbacked" due to an injury he suffered while serving his country in WWII. :|

because people get crazy popular when they're assassinated / die.

doubly so if that person happens to be the leader of the free world.

people all of a sudden love him more, because he is dead and gone and they can never have him back.

Chuck Norris built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Chuck met all three bullets with his beard, deflecting them. JFK's head exploded out of sheer amazement.

His vision on direction of the country should go:
for example setting the goal of going to the moon

His compassion or sense of doing the right thing:
for example his championing the Civil Rights movement and the creation of the Peace Core.

His sense of humor.

His sense and knowlegde of history.

His handling of the Cuban missle crisis. I think his contemporaries, for example Nixon, would have push the USSR into a nuclear exchange.

The health of the economy at the time.
