i would think the city would be interested in hosting the 2012 olympics.

if so, why would they be against a plan to improve the infrastructure to host such an event?

the mayor is all for the Olympics and was pushing for a stadium. The only ones who were against it had bigger concerns (such as budget and traffic) than the Olympics.

The main opponent was/is Cablevision, who owns Madison Square Garden. A new stadium will compete with MSG as a major venue for concerts and other events. The mayor also wants to use the stadium as a convention center.

The teacher's union also opposes the deal, as they feel that the money is better spent on the education system.
