I am wanting to put a HP2200 printer on my home network which uses the MS networking under Win98SE. The only card specified by HP is the JetDirect 610N, list is a whopping $280. Even on some auction sites...these go for $140 or so, still too high just to attach a printer to a network.

It has been suggested by some that a 600N is interchangeable but not listed on HP's site. These can be purchased for around $50 or $60, still high but a lot easier to digest than the 610N. Can anyone confirm the compatibility?

Also, what other cost efficient options are out there to network a HP 2200 printer.

Thanks, Mac

You're right, it's just very inconvenient to have to always make sure the PC the printer is attached to is on. Once I installed a JetDirect card on my HP LaserJet 4, there was no turning back...you merely turn on the printer and voila, anyone can use it. It so simple.

Go with the 600N..it's the same as the 610 except that the 610 supports a higher throughput. Both are the correct EIO boards, and I agree that JetDirects are the way to go!

CBuxton,

Thanks for the reply back, but are you certain that the 600N will work with a LaserJet 2200? Is it the same form factor, firmware compatibile, etc? Better yet, have you seen this work?

The reason for my caution is that HP's site does does not include the LJ 2200 as a compatible printer.

Check this out. Basically it says that the 600N will support any HP EIO based printer.
600N specs
This page: 2200 Specs lists the 2200 printer specs, and the 600N as an optional network card as well as the 610N. Basically the differences include a nice web interface with the 610, and higher throughput. I'd go with the 600
