I don't think you're entirely wrong, HL2 may technically predate steam, I was playing it before I signed up at least, I didn't think it was necessary to play at the time.I thought Steam was older than that TBH. I bought the HL2 pack (orange? bronze? idr) to get CS:Source, and played it for a while before WoW released in Nov of 2004.
That was my account creation and first purchase on Steam, and at that time I didn't think the service was that new. Never looked into when it started though, so yeah.
Edit: HL2 released the same month as WoW, so IDK what the hell I'm remembering. I'm too old, lol.

2nd ETA: HL2/CS:S were my first digital download format games I purchased. It opened the flood gates for me, hehe.
This will always be my favorite "worst timeline" narrative, always. Especially since my friends had named their cat Harambi decades before that happened.
