Just call it......

(think the old guy knew he was betting his life?)

Anton Chigurh of "No Country for Old Men" was the most realistic psychopath.

Javier Bardem's character in "No Country for Old Men" is a classic psychopath, Leistedt and his colleagues concluded in their report.

Chigurh approaches murder with an uncanny sense of normalcy, perfectly happy to empty his trademark bolt pistol without so much as a wince.

"He seems to be effectively invulnerable and resistant to any form of emotion or humanity," the researchers wrote."

Either academics live in a protective bubble if THAT's what they think of a psychopath or film really hasn't gotten to the point they really know what a psychopath is. That guy has the charisma of a paper bag and gives off the vibe he has loose screws, not what psychopaths irl present themselves.

No, the psychopath is not someone you can see with first impressions. In fact, if you go by first impressions, the psychopath will present himself/herself as someone of superior character, someone principled, someone seeking to better than world. That's because they follow can social norms with conviction even if the conviction has no basis. They can say a lie straight to your face, but with the delivery of a truth-teller. But the moral human does not realize he is a semi-pliable automaton, when being looked at straight in the eye and hearing a strong voice convincing him the psychopath he/she is listening to is actually lying. He is also irrational, while the psychopath is in tune with "rationality".

Just pull up a lawyer; a cop; a politician; a career criminal; a businessman; a real estate agent; or some professional "victim"; "religious bragger"; etc, and you've likely got your psychopath.

So .... the guys with the psych-doctorates are all wrong BUT you nailed it ?!?

:p ;)

Have you ever seen that movie? Honestly it sounds like you have no idea what a "psychopath" is.

"Chigurh" does EVERY ONE of these.... except lie.

Common signs of psychopathy:

  • socially irresponsible behavior.
  • disregarding or violating the rights of others.
  • inability to distinguish between right and wrong.
  • difficulty with showing remorse or empathy.
  • tendency to lie often.
  • manipulating and hurting others.
  • recurring problems with the law.

Seriously anyone NOT at least a bit disturbed by "Chigurh" isn't paying attention.... I've known people like that but not quite as far gone. (or I might be!)

Those in the degree-occupation ivory tower are stuck in the tunnel vision of science and class; they are clueless to the world of logic, legal "street smarts", and exploitation of social norms. They've never dealt with psychopaths in real life beyond the one shady mechanic or crappy real estate agent. Nor are they fully aware certain occupations train even normals into acquiring some psychopathy.

If a sex offender is going to be able to molest a landlord's daughter over the course of 1.5 years, he obviously isn't going to present himself as a Chigurh to the girls' parents. No, he's going to buddy up with older brother of the sister at work and play to the parents' sympathies that he's suffering and homeless, and just needs some help. Manners of great politeness, and a noble demeanor.

Those are indeed the traits but figuring out one's being played requires the ability to analyze beyond face value. Detecting lies requires logical reasoning.

Yeah, I did about 18 years ago(hot damn the time flies). One dude got a windfall of cash and wanted to keep it. Lewellyn was the name. Chigurh was hiding in the hotel room and the character Tommy Lee Jones played walked out even though he knew Chigurh was in there.

But he's not a psychopath with the obvious villainy traits and complete lack of social skills he has.

It's like people do not pay attention to the fact Ted Bundy went to law school. So not only did he have the wiring, he had the "training" to know how to escape the system.

Furthermore, psychos may not show empathy, but they have "it". They knew the levers and responses normal people bind themselves to, and exploit it for their advantage.

I also watched this interview with a real sociopath just this Monday:

Sociopathy is different than psychopathy (though there is some overlap). You're thinking of a sociopath. Chigurh was a psychopath.

This is some nonsense. You know that people with advanced degrees also live in the world too, right? There’s no actual line between them and anyone else. Furthermore we’re talking about psych PhDs, you can’t even claim the argument that they’re rich and out of touch because, well, it’s psychology research and they are probably not. And in the rare cases that they are they still would have gone through a decade of graduate school and post doc work making $15-20k per year. You know this, right?
