I always found this statement funny. Scientifically proven, yet never observed in real life.
In theory we could end traffic jams by just letting everyone drive 180 MPH so they are on the roads for smaller amounts of time. In practice, a lot of people would die and traffic would be worse.
I have observed it - but people are morons.
I will rally support for, and do everything I can--as a person with basically zero power in this world--to ensure we have driverless cars mandated across the board. Granted, I may allow for super-difficult-to-acquire licenses [at least when compared to the driving standards we have today] to allow for human piloting in certain areas. And "playgrounds" would be setup for those who desperately want their time behind the wheel.
Just you wait - once we remove humans from behind the wheel, highway traffic will be able to maintain ludicrous speeds without once single traffic jam or bunch up. With AI, cars that talk to each other will ensure that even those damned unpredictable deer and other wildlife will be safely avoided and all traffic diverted smoothly.
Humans are too stupid for these situations, or unskilled behind the wheel, at least the majority.
