Villagers furious with Christian Missionaries

Samanthapettai, Jan 16 (ANI): Rage and fury has gripped this tsunami-hit tiny Hindu village in India's southern Tamil Nadu after a group of Christian missionaries allegedly refused them aid for not agreeing to follow their religion.

Samanthapettai, near the temple town of Madurai, faced near devastation on the December 26 when massive tidal waves wiped it clean of homes and lives.

Most of the 200 people here are homeless or displaced , battling to rebuild lives and locating lost family members besides facing risks of epidemic, disease and trauma.

Jubilant at seeing the relief trucks loaded with food, clothes and the much-needed medicines the villagers, many of who have not had a square meal in days, were shocked when the nuns asked them to convert before distributing biscuits and water.

Heated arguments broke out as the locals forcibly tried to stop the relief trucks from leaving. The missionaries, who rushed into their cars on seeing television reporters and the cameras refusing to comment on the incident and managed to leave the village.

Disappointed and shocked into disbelief the hapless villagers still await aid.

"Many NGOs (volunteer groups) are extending help to us but there in our village the NGO, which was till now helping us is now asking us to follow the Christian religion. We are staunch followers of Hindu religion and refused their request. And after that these people with their aid materials are leaving the village without distributing that to us," Rajni Kumar, a villager said.

The incident is an exception to concerted charity in a catastrophe that has left no one untouched.(ANI)

Wonder? I don't. I think Jesus would have been pissed. Their actions go against what Jesus taught. As a Chrisitain, I am outraged at this story. If anyone can find out the name of this particular organization, I would be more than happy, hell I'd get a hard-on, writing a e-mail to these people expressing my thoughts on this matter.

How do you feel about the term islamo-fascists?

not particularly good.
why?

Just checking to see if you're consistent.

thats pretty snotty of you. :)

but i certainly have a problem with the blatant overuse of the "nazi" label.
while the language of labels is necessary to a certain extent, it is dangerous; labels can help to remove the much needed symbolism and weight of connotation. especially with something like nazi. the paradox of a "jesus nazi" in the literal sense is pretty interesting though.

Not really. Based on my experience many "defenders" of what they consider to be christianity have a double-standard with regard to Islam. They judge Islam based on the actions of a few but if someone tries to generalize about Christians they get outraged. So I was just seeing if you were one of them. It's not like accused you of it. I just asked you.

im not christian. i was just poking fun at you.
i understand that the phrase is probably offensive to christians and i stepped in to say it. personally, i worry more about throwing around the word "nazi" which i believe detracts from the seriousness of the genocide of world war two.

Wow... that's just messed up. Christian leaders need to step up and denounce such an act. Otherwise, it's a silent acceptance....

:)cookie: to whoever sees what I'm trying to 'flipside')

Yup, guilty by association. Lots of people here apply it to Islam; I can't see why they wouldn't apply it to Christianity as well...

Not good, if true. That is the very thing India is most concerned of, so it kind of makes me wonder if it was some type of communication error, it's unusual for Catholics to insist on conversion before aid is distributed. I assume they are implying Catholic, since they said "nuns". Or maybe they just call every Christian woman a nun.

WWJD? It's clearly stated in the bible that Jesus demanded people worship him before he offered a helping hand.

But if it wasn't... you certainly would say they're being un-Christian-like right?

this is a continual concern of many poor countries who on one hand struggle to keep their religion and tradition intact in an ever changing world... and on the other have dire need for the aid given out by groups who are more often than not, christain missionaries.

A lot of you people don't seem to understand what Christianity is all about: kicking ass. Why do you think Jesus went midieval in the temple? He knew violence was good and necessary. Jesus was all about vengeance and not understanding those different from you. That's why he said that when someone smack you on the cheek you need to get angry and put them into a sexual pyramid and take pictures of it.

Jesus would kick all of their asses... without a doubt .. If I was Jesus I would force those missionaries to stay there for a year or more and work hard labor helping those people get back on their feet and force them to learn about the other peoples religion..

I wonder if these people LIED to get their trucks that far into the territory?

If I was responsible for letting Aid Vehicles go through to those areas I would ask them if they are going to try to convert people or not...
