On a more serious note regarding compromise of the data - the FBI has determined it was NOT. (with a high degree of confidence, mind you! ;) )

Now let's say someone took the HDD and made an image of the entire disk with Ghost. So an exact copy was somewhere. Files and folders would have no change in attributes so would they still be sure? There goes that confidence out the window. Of course the scofflaw would have to be extremely careful in the physical handling aspect - the removal and replacement of the hard disk in the computer.

i think that they can check these things. maybe some residual signature left over by ghost designed especially for this scenerio. if there is some other copy, i don't think the FBI can do much about it tho.

why would someone go to that much trouble? Connect it to a network and transfer the files or just burn them to a CD/DVD if the lappy has a burner on it.

Most likely an official govt. computer is a domain member and will have strong passwords on all accounts both domain and local. Even if it were cracked, that would be obvious as the file attribute changes. Ghost can be run in forensic mode without leaving signatures on both sources and destination. HOPEFULLY the disk had NTFS file encryption enabled!
