Jersey City, what's it like?

My husband has to go work there for 6 weeks, we were just curious what it was like.

it really depends.. I'd say it's pretty much close to what NYC would look like..

depending on the part he is.. it can even be more Ghetto

It's not that bad tho.. around Journal Square

OMG, RU serious? Where R you from? Wait, lemme check....OK, up there by the Canadian border, eh? Upstate NY is a beautiful place. My uncle had a little summer place up in a town called Ellenville...it's off of 206. Anyway.

I don't know how to break this to you , but Jersey City is a sh*thole. It's just as dangerous and dirty as NYC. I assume he's been down to NYC B4, right? If so, he'll do just fine in Jersey City. Don't put your bags down and definitely keep your wallet in your front pocket...pickpockets can spot a yukle from a mile away.

I'm not being mean or anything like that...I grew up in the Bronx, commuted to Manhattan on the subway for 11 years AND worked in Jersey City for about 6 months. I know all about it. Good luck!

Did you ever see the Seinfeld episodes where they go to a mall? That mall is in Jersey City.

Parts of it are pretty rough, but there are some nice neighborhoods (see Journal Square above). The Iron Monkey is a pretty good restaurant, I know that much. It is also next to Hoboken, which is a VERY fun town.

Ummm...it's a pretty rough city. Not a very nice place at all.

My grandfather used to own a hardware store there (till 1985 when he retired) and he used to live there (he was born there). Actually my mom even lived there until she was 7. It's gone downhill since then though.

I went there 2 years ago with my grandfather for a lil walk down memory lane since he sold his store when I was so young I never even got to go to it! (Of course it is no longer a hardware store, but nonetheless it was nice to see where it was.) Not a nice area. =\

According to mwilding there are some nice areas...I didn't see them when I was there, but hey, I was mostly in the inner part of Jersey City so maybe we just did see it when we were there.

Jersey City is a mixed area. Some nicer parts and some not so nice. There are plenty of nice areas around it to. Just have your husband ask around a little when he gets in to find out what the areas are to avoid (they do change, asking locals is the best plan) and he'll be fine.

Jersy City is very near NYC which I like visiting (I worked in NYC for 2 years) and my folks live in New Jersey. I've lived in a bunch of places in the US since I moved from Montreal and I like NJ the best.

I also know upstate NY between Albany and Montreal pretty well, especially the Glens Falls area and Plattsburg.

Just like any city, Jersey City has its nice and not so nice parts. I really like the area down by the waterfront, it's pretty peaceful and relaxing, I just wish property there wasnt so damn expensive. But just like any other city, there are some places that I wouldnt want to be at night.
