Our SS# is called a National Insurance Number and all you can do with it if you get hold of it is claim state handouts. Its not used in the same way your SS# is.

We give it to our employer for tax paying and to the dole office for claiming unemployment.

But thats about it...

That's all the SSN is officially. But it's a defacto ID number. I'm just glad they finally made banks NOT use it for account numbers. But the gov agencies aren't complaining, it makes it easier to find info on people.
