If you don't know what these units do, they let you hook up something like a game system or DVD player to your old TV system with just the ANT-IN connection.

This is a link to a similar product from Radio Shack costing $29.99.

Radio Shack

This deal might be YMMV or B&M.

I used to use something called a UHF modulator. an EXTREMELY useful gadget that took A/V output from a vcr, cable box etc and converted it to UHF channel 19 (selectable output from 19-26) I had a few 5" b/w tvs in convenient locations around the house and my wife could monitor tv, vcr tapes while doing laundry (or using the bathroom). With an rf device called a leapfrog, which transmitted the remote's signal back to the equipment in the bedroom and she was able to change channels and forward past commercials on her soap tapes.

Since the purpose of a RF modulator is to combine signals and put them over the coax, what would be the point of a svideo input ? either composite or svideo will wind up the same in the end, unless for some reason your device can't do composite but can do svideo.

Most sets that have S video, also have the necessary inputs for NOT needing one of these.
These are for very old sets that you don't have any option but to use one of these.

The point is.... name a device that has svideo output but not composite video output.

Other than chaeper video cards there really aren't many. So one of these with a composite input does as much as one with an svideo one.

It don't mean squat whether you output your source in composite or svideo when you're gonna combine it with sound and output to coax all together anyways with one of these.

A lot of the cheaper DVD players don't have a RCA outputs, and only a S-Video output to drive the price of the unit down. Therefore, unless your TV has a S-Video input, you need a RF modulator to convert it to either RCA or Coax on the TV!

I havn't seen any cheap players that do that... I have looked at a few. Not calling you a liar, just that that is very strange. SVideo is probably the least likely option for connectivity (besides component inputs). So, I'd think they'd at least default to RCA in that case... plus they have to do RCA for audio then, so, only one more 'jack'. Circuitry is already there for RCA if it has SVIDEO capability anyway. So, having ONLY Svideo is really odd.

Certainly something I would return. If I had RCA jacks and still have to buy a $30 modulator to make your $40 DVD player work, that is crazy. You may as well have bought one of the many <$70 units with RCA jacks then.

Get 'em while you can. It looks like Recoton is either very sick or going out of business.

Note that that is a combination svideo video selector device and RF modulator. most RF modulators by themselves go for over 20 and a 4 device Svideo selector goes for prob around 30 barring a sale. Not sure if the phillips can do video switching to the composite output like some receivers and selectors can or just to the Coax output

If the phillips device could be used separately to switch between composite or svideo devices all using a composite output then that price would be really good.

Actually, if you can find them... RatShacks also carry a discontinued RF Modulator that's pretty much exactly the same as the $30 one. I give it to customers that are nice to me and don't give me a hassle and if they're already buying big stuff from me.

I'll see if I can't dig up the SKU for folks tonite... methinks the price is $3 but I know I have at least 4 more in the back of my store.
