Jefferson gets ousted in Louisaiana upset

William Jefferson, even though a democratic, has vexed the democratic leadership ever since a sting operation found nearly a $100,000 of cash inside his freezer. Normally he should have been prosecuted by now or be rejected by the voters.
But Jefferson has led a charmed life for over two years, but third times a charm, Jefferson finally lost a hurricane delayed election to an underdog GOP opponent named Cao. Even as a partisan democrat, I have to say good riddance to bad rubbish.

Good to know American's are ready to clean up Washington. First Ted Stevens, now Jefferson! Excellent!

Yep...dirty is dirty and needs to be cleaned up.

While Jefferson hasn't been tried or convicted...YET, I suspect the day is coming.

Of course, I'd have preferred to see them replace him with another Democrat...but it IS "Loozeyana" after all...not exactly a bastion of Democracy...:p

Talk about a big job. The problem is the old guard corrupts the new hires. It's hard to get ahead of the curve.

Nothing suspicious about that!

I am actually surprised about how many votes were cast in his favor. Reuters says 47% (Jefferson) versus 50% (Cao).

Louisiana went about 60%/40% McCain over Obama.

The 2nd District of Louisiana includes the city proper, and a County that was named after Jefferson. (The 'Other' Jefferson)

The population make up is dominantly African-American, and the Asian is the designated minority,Wiki less than 3%.

Since Hurricane Katrina, the area is still underpopulated, as over 20% of the displaced have not returned - it's been 3 years.
Most of them 'Suburbanized' by leaving the New Orleans Metropolitan area, and resettled along the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
The Hwy 12 corridor West from Slidell to Baton Rouge, for example

In order for Cao to have won under any circumstance is that he received a rather large Black support.

Local Newspaper, the 'Comments' are interesting too . .

The Black Clergy in New Orleans came out quite vocal in support of Jefferson, seems like it was an error on their part.

Hardly an upset.

Louisiana is as bad as Texas.

They should just secede from the the U.S.

The country would be better off.

and take Mississipi, Alabama and Georgia too.

Identity politics at its finest.

I am sure the 47% fall into the following categories:

1. Don't know about the indictment.
2. Don't care about the indictment.
3. Voted for him because he is black.
4. Voted for him because he is a Democrat.

I would even suspect that some voted for him because of what he has done for the district, in their eyes. He may be a crook, but he is their crook.

I was reading somewhere something similar about Ted Stevens. Considering how small Alaska is and how long Stevens had served there, he had probably met/helped/whatever a pretty sizable portion of the state's electorate. It's hard to vote against a guy who has put money in your pocket personally.

Esk, I made the comment about the Stevens thing that Republicans would rather put him in office then force him to resign so they could keep a Republican in that seat.

I am sure the same mindset was going on in LA. Of course they wouldn't get a Dem to replace him since they have an R governor, unless they have one of those same party laws.

I have to say that I sincerely doubt most voters in Alaska know enough about Alaskan senatorial succession to be thinking that far ahead. I'd love to think the average voter is that informed, but to me the normal power of incumbency along with close ties to the community are far more likely causes.

This election cycle has given me a nice smile that people will actually boot out a crook. Stevens, Jefferson, and hopefully up next Rangel.

 to the people of that district!

Can't do that now, Dave. We want to keep getting that tax money from the north. You know, spread the wealth.

Well Stevens was a cash machine for the state and we all know how much that helps when it comes to getting votes.

Well, to be fair, you've supported a gibbering idiot who can't keep his facts straight for President the last 8 years. ;)

I'm sure there's no personal reason for you wanting Georgia to secede. None at all. ;)

Ya'll northerners might wanna wait till summer to do that, be awfully cold otherwise.

On topic: Dollar Bill lost purely because of Gustov/Ike. If the general election would have been held on the same day as the presidential election as it was scheduled Dollar Bill would have won in a heartbeat.
