This was supposed to happen last year, I guess it's finally going to go down. Just a big publicity thing, but it will be interesting to see how they handle each other's cars.

Champions To Drive Cars Around IMS Road Course On June 11

Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials announced April 17 that four-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon and 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner and Formula One superstar Juan Pablo Montoya will participate in speed demonstration laps in their cars on Wednesday, June 11 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Gordon and Montoya will trade places at the Speedway when they take turns driving laps around the 2.606-mile road course in Gordon?s DuPont Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Montoya?s BMW WilliamsF1 BMW FW25 car. This will be the first time that Gordon and Montoya will be behind the wheel of a Formula One car and NASCAR Winston Cup car, respectively.

?The Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff is excited to play host to such an event,? said Joie Chitwood, senior V.P. of IMS Business Affairs. ?Jeff and Juan are race car drivers who love to drive cars ? fast. So it?s going to be fun to watch them experiment in different cars on the road course.?

Gordon will attempt to win his fourth Brickyard 400 on Sunday, Aug. 3 at the Speedway. He has competed in 12 events on the Speedway oval: nine NASCAR Winston Cup races and three IROC events. The demonstration laps will be his first laps on the IMS road course.

?There are a lot of things to coordinate to make this happen,? said Gordon. ?I?m just excited about this opportunity. It?s something I?ve dreamed of, just getting behind the wheel of an F1 car and seeing what it was like. I don?t plan on going F1 racing, but I would love to just get that experience.?

Montoya, who won the 2000 Indianapolis 500, will attempt to become the first driver in Speedway history to win on both the famed 2.5-mile oval and road course when he competes in the fourth United States Grand Prix on Sept. 28. He is in his third season with BMW WilliamsF1 and has one career win, ten career poles and is sixth in the 2003 FIA Driver?s Championship.

?The experience will be very interesting, and driving a big, heavy NASCAR car will certainly be different,? said Montoya. ?I don?t think Jeff should be concerned that I will take away his job, but I will enjoy the opportunity of driving his Chevrolet and letting him take my BMW WilliamsF1 Team car for a drive on Indy?s road course.?

In addition to the demonstration laps, Montoya and Gordon will participate in a media luncheon and press conference. Fans will have free access to IMS? South Terrace grandstands for viewing.

Tickets for the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400 and the United States Grand Prix can be purchased online at www.imstix.com, or by calling the IMS ticket office at (317) 492-6700 or (800) 822-INDY outside the Indianapolis area.

Pretty cool. Didn't Jeff Gordon previously drive a rally car (Peugot I believe)?

I could see Gordon going into different types of motor racing, such as F1 and Le Mans. It would be fun to watch!

There are days when I miss living in Indiana and regret moving out here.

But then I look at the bright sunny sky, the sun shining, and Pike's Peak and I don't miss it so much.

Getting wasted on race day, though... that's hard to replace.

Should be neat... both Jeff and Juan have experience with oval tracks... it would be more interesting if Gordon drove on the F1 track at Indy in the Williams. See how fast he is compared to Montoya...

Jeff Gordon was supposed to drive single-seaters in the first place... but they couldn't afford to push him through that route when he started so off he went to NASCAR. :( ...and here comes the IRL just for that reason... tooooooooooooo bad those single seaters suck and they only race on ovals. Would've been pretty cool to see Jeff Gordon in F1... :D

I remember Gordon saying how his dream is to drive Michael Schumacher's Ferrari... not a Williams BMW... :p :D

reminds me of "Days of Thunder"

"Before, your tires were twice as wide and the car weighed half as much...now the car weighs twice as much and the tires are half as wide" or some such...the coach dude comparing Indycars to nascar for Cole

Michael is too much of a stuck up, god-complex racer to switch with Gordon. I thought of him as a nice guy until I read his interview in Automobile mag a few months ago. I know the man is great, but he is seriously arrogant.

Well he has that sort of arrogant air... but i suppose he's the only one he can back it up with what he's done lately. Senna had it too... :) Anyway... i'm a Ferrari fan first and a Schumacher fan second... if he leaves and the red cars start losing... oh well... :D

Got a link for that article? Im interested in reading it. I alwys thought of Micheal to be a great guy, I read a few interviews with him (one regarding the Enzo) and another regarding his publicity meeting with Sachin Tendulkar (India's cricket star).

Thanks for scanning it and hosting it man!

I read it all of it, he didn't come across as too arrogant. I mean he single-handley rebuilt Ferrari's F1 career in the mid-1990s and made it the success that it is today, so a little showing of pride is understandable. And he was spot on when he said Alfonso was going to be the dark horse. My prediction, he will become future Ferrari co-driver. And his last comment about being beaten by someone else, it didn't sound too arrogant. But then again, he did sound like an ass on his comment about WRC and F3/CART/IRL.

Btw if you want to see arrogant and sissy, check this video of Juan Pablo Montoya getting hit in the head with a camera by accident

Hmmm nice read :D... but honestly... i thought he was much more arrogant during his Benetton days... if the rally part was what probably set him off as arrogant i'm sure thats how he exactly feels. I've seen this guy on TV race karts on ice and he seems to enjoy it. :) Anyway... my favorite Ferrari driver is still Gilles. :D

His (Montoya's) wife seems hot thoug! :D

I'm guessing he was just mad that day and getting hit by the camera just put him over the edge. Either way, it is still funny!
