I don't know a thing about cars. gf and I wanted to get a car (first one) next year after I graduate. I have always like these types of Jeeps. Are they prone to lots of problems? Anyone on this board have experience with em?

If you don't know much and don't care to know very much then it's probably not a vehicle for you. They tend to break, but it's very cheap to fix.

wrangler... friend had one. not too comfortable, not very fast, and quite noisy. but it's cool to have the roof out, the doors out, and it does feel very rugged. i don't think it's too good on the gas either.

My roommate speaks very highly of his Jeep. If you have the least bit of mechanical knowledge you can fix them for a little $$, but they can last forever if you take care of them. They're built to be very very durable.

I'd say the Jeep Wrangler is better than some cars.

If you aren't going to take on massive road trips and plan to off road & or do short commutes, go for it, otherwise buy a regular car.

I'm jonesing for an 07' with a diesel.

I know the diesel sucks ass, but a convertable diesel is so badass I don't think I'll be able to resist. :shocked:

Diesel isn't going in the Wrangler, and that's not the 2007 Wrangler. That picture you have is a 2-door Rescue. The lack of removable doors and the location of the door handle are both wrong.

My dad's owned a couple of Jeeps and has never had any problems with them. Of course, he doesn't drive it much (because it'd get dirty, you know) and he takes really good care of it. The last Jeep he had (which he traded in to get his newer one) had so few miles on it and was in such good condition that the car salesman bought it for himself. They're pretty cool cars.

Edit: Oh, and he owned Wranglers, like the one in the pic in the OP.

Oops, that's right about the Rescue/Wrangler, the only spy shots of the Wrangler I've seen have them covered in vinyl...

But according to the article I linked to:

the automaker is gearing up to offer a diesel-engine option on the redesigned Jeep Wrangler next year.

The Liberty diesel MPG is pretty lame, but I've wanted a diesel Wrangler style Jeep ever since I saw one the Air Force used several decades ago.

Our family has one.

Cons:
Poor gas mileage.
Uncomfortable for long highway trips.

Pros:

Heats up fast in winter.
Decent power.
I never managed to get it stuck, anywhere.

If you get a new car every two or three years its not to bad.

 

As good as any other car out there.

The straight 6 is legendary and last forever but if you don't plan to offroad it get something else. Nothing out ther much better offroad and that shows onroad.

Side impact airbags are neither regulated nor mandated, Side impact standards currently apply only to cars, but manufacturers have been making some trucks safer by adopting the technology to trucks.

Jeeps rule. Best 4x4 you can get, and very reliable. Lots of off-road fun.

Just depends on what you are looking for. Jeeps aren't for everyone.

I have a CJ-7 that I'm in the (slow) process of putting back on the road and the trail. The newer Wranglers are great vehicles.

The Rubicon version comes with air lockers in the front and rear, and is damn near unstoppable off road.

Fantastic 2nd vehicle.

Lousy only vehicle.

I've owned 3. Wranglers are great. Look for a 1999-2001 with the 4.0 six cyl, which will run you between $9,000 - $12,000.

Cons: Terrible on the highway. Bad gas milage. Noisy. Can't leave anything inside b/c it will get stolen. Harsh ride. If your daily commute takes you past 60 mph its awful.

Pros: Most-convertible convertible you can have. Removable doors. Everybody thinks it is cool. For $400 you can put a 2 inch lift on and run 31-32-33 inch tires. Never gets stuck. Very dependable (just not that much on it to break). If your daily commute never takes you over 45 mph it's fantastic.

And if youre waiting until next year to buy, that might be a good thing. DCX has some things up its sleeve. (I work there and have seen the new models driving around)

I'll vouch for this one. My parents own a Cherokee with 134k miles on it, and it's still running beautifully. My cousin owns another cherokee, with the same engine, and has 185k or so on hers. It's still running great, too. Gas mileage does suck though, in both cases.

my gf has an '00 cherokee. I hate it, she hates it, and her dad hates it. The only Jeep I could ever justify owning is a GC.

Sister had a 2000 Grand Cherokee...they hated it. Lots of electrical problems. Brakes went out within 5,000 miles. Etc. They recently traded it for a Sequoia. On a good note, however, it was a nice comfortable ride with plenty of power.
