The size of four aircraft carriers, the $8 billion Freedom Ship will essentially be a flat-bottomed barge with a 25-storey steel building, propelled by gigantic turbine engines. The roof will feature airstrips and a marina will surround the ship for residents and visitors to dock boats. The entire structure will measure over 1.5 kilometres long, 228 metres wide and 106 metres tall.

Freedom Ship will have space for 17,000 resident families, up to 20,000 daily visitors and 3,000 businesses, including banks, restaurants, grocery stores, and video-rental outlets.

Damn that's cool! :D

Those who suffer sea-sickness need not apply
I would imagine on a ship that big, sea sickness would not be a problem.

I thought of that too. Kinda hard to protect when it's out in the middle of nowhere.

Even though they claim to be starting construction later this year (or whatever that first article said) I'm still wondering if they'll actually have enough funds to complete it.

One other thing. I know it's a cumbersome ship where functionality will have to take the front seat, but it sure isn't an architectural beauty is it? :( I realize it can't take on the same smooth lines of other cruise ships, or even the sweeping lines of an aircraft carrier. But it defeintely won't be the best looking ship on the seas.

I just saw a Discovery show that was discussing this ship. The thing is huge.

I wonder what kind of internet connection they get in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldnt mind working on the ship (engineer), it seems like an interesting idea.

Edit: Just a thought, what country is it part of? Who would you pay taxes to?

From what I read it would only be a place for the uber-rich. A private resort where regular folk couldn't even visit. That is sad. I'd love to simply be able to go visit a ship like that!

I imagine you would pay to the country under which it is registered.
