NB Sport or NB Special Editions (10AEs, etc) =

Yup, it's a fun little car. But I need something to drive in the winter. Either another "nice" car to drive year round, or a beater to drive winters only.

So from how I understand it.

You are thinking of selling your Miata and getting a nice all-season car.
or
Keeping your Miata and just having a beater for the winter?

What is your price range for a nice all-season car? What about the price range for a beater?

Essentially $0 at the moment. I'm finishing up college and moving, so my funds are accounted for. I just have to figure out which way I want to go by next fall some time.

The beater would probably just be something in the $2-3k range. If I trade in my car, hopefully get something in the $20-25k range, maybe me more if I really like something. I'll have to get a good deal though. I got $6k off msrp on my current car, and would try to do that again.

If you have the room for it and can afford it - buy a used 99-01 wrangler for $10k, and then lease or buy something cheap (like an altima?) that is reasonable to drive on the highway / trips to the mall / etc. Plus then you'll have a fun project vehicle that you can work on, without jeopardizing your daily driver.

The only problem I see with a beater is a slightly higher insurance payment and having room for it.

The problem I see with selling your car is that you'd probally get 15k or so for the Miata, so you'll still owe 10k on whatever new car you decide to purchase. I also can't think of very many all season fun cars. WRX?

Ever thought of just sandbagging your trunk and throwing some winter tires on there? I havn't done it myself (I live in Florida), but I hear the car is fine to drive. That seems like the most economical choice.

A beater will probably lower his payments. PLPD plus multi-car discounts on his first vehicle, plus he can list his beater as his primary, lowering the price on the nice car even further.

$15k for it would be awesome. I got it new for $16.9k, and owe much less.

I just don't drive it in the winter, because I don't want it to rust.

Well then, if thats the case, I stand corrected. Having a beater might even be a better option, assuming you had the room.

And about that $15k, that might be a bit inflated. Brian Goodwin has his 2003 Club Sport w/ 2600 miles for only $14k. Maybe $13k is a more realistic estimate?
