That's because you have those big monstar tires mounted on it. 😉

34's this summer! 😀

Down4U, Unless you are getting under 15-16, you do not have a problem other than winter.
You still looking for a new/used rear axle?

yes sir. Best price i got quoted for was $400 for a 1995 8.8 w/ rear discs, 4.10s, and an LSD

First off you need to understand that colder weather and special blended fuel can affect your fuel mileage up to 20%. Plus the price of gas has jumped quite a bit in the last month, example: last month it cost $12-13 to fill up my car, 92Escort GT, today it cost $21. You need to track your mileage better in order to understand the differences.

Here is a simple method.

Next fill-up reset you trip meter.
The following fill-up record the number of gallons used and miles driven.
Then divide the number of miles by the number of gallons and there is your MPG.

300/10 = 30 MPG

OK?
Ok.. How do I determine the number of gallons used? Subtract the size of my tank in gallons against the number of gallons it took to fill it up?

I'm sure it's doing way less than 15. It would do 15 if it were a brand new engine, mine already has 113k on it.

To determine the number of gallons used, just write down the amount that you used when filling up your tank. Then, take the mileage that you drove during the period between the fill-ups. Mileage/Gas used = M.P.G.

So you are getting under 345 miles to a tank? The tank in a ZJ is 23 gallons.

Let me put it this way. A 100-mile round trip (mostly highway driving) sucks up a quarter of a tank guaranteed, and this was a few months ago when I used to take a trip like that.

Don't diss your engine because it has 113K on it. Most new vehicles don't start to get decent gas mileage until they have about 5,000 miles on them. Yours might just be starting to purr. Plus, how the miles were added is more important than the actual mileage on the odometer. If a vehicle was used exclusively in the city for 113K, it will be far inferior to a vehicle that was used for 113K of strictly highway driving.

Hmm.. If a 100mile round trip only used 1/4 a tank, you would be getting around 400miles/tank or 17MPG. 🙂

Oh no, I'm not dissing it at all, but it is a general known fact that engines with mileage on it start to lose compression which can lead to worst gas mileage. In fact I love the way the engine responds for a 6-cylinder on a GC body, I just wish it wasn't as lazy compared to the boxy Cherokee.

I'm not really sure if the previous owner drove her mostly on highway or in the city. From the condition that my truck is in, for all I know he simply used it to cruise from his house to work in some secluded part of New Jersey (that's where the first reported title was issued). It is pretty much in mint condition.

I'm not sure what size is the tank on my GC, probably a 20-gallon but I might be wrong.

its 23, trust me 🙂. 100 miles every quarter tank is rather good. Keep in mind that there is a buffer zone(6 gallons for me) between E on the gauge and true empty.

Remember, this was highway driving, which that engine should be doing 20 for. 🙂

no, ford explorer

In all honesty, if the engine is otherwise running fine.. it's probably just your imagination. Your paying much more attention to it now that it actually has your attention.

But yeah, calculate your MPG for a while.. and see what your getting.

Remember, 100 miles to the quarter tank was while doing highway driving. I have the same buffer zone, but only does it when completely full. The needle doesn't move from F toward empty for a couple of miles like it normally would when it's not totally full any more.

Yeah.. She's otherwise running peachy. I love that truck. 🙂 I guess she's like me, she likes to eat a lot. 😉

The best I could find was a 98 8.8 w/rear discs, 4.10, and LSD for $450.00 Make sure that 95 axle is a 4.10, Ford didn't offer that axle ratio in 95 in the explorer.

hmm... i better check. The guy gets his axles surplus, so i dont think he really knows what he has 🙂. I dont really want LSD since i'm going to get a locker.

Fuel consumption
Just a thought
If your coolant sensor were to take a dive it would tell the computer that the engine was cold all the time.
Then, The computer would make the engine run rich.
Using more gas.....
That combined with winter weather would cause a noticable decrease in mileage

You can go to "autozone" and have codes pulled for free

That's interesting. Wouldn't the CHECK ENGINE light come on though?

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but the other day the CHECK ENGINE light came on. The day before that happened I had taken her to the shop to get the oil changed. Being suspicious of the mechanic, I checked the amount of engine oil and found it needed a quart and a half of oil even though they had just replaced it for me.

The following day after I added the oil, the CHECK ENGINE light went away.

I've been monitoring the engine for any major leakage and there is none that I could tell, so it was definitely not a leak.

Normaly the check engine light will not come when the engine oil is a little low.
If the light came on then it set a code
I would have the code pulled and see what it is
(for free)

Can they still tell what it pulled even though the CHECK ENGINE light turned back off? I would assume there's a log of error codes somewhere.
