What does that mean? Is this from the description of one For Sale?

I think this means that is the range in which he'll buy a vehicle. Too bad for him though because that still seems like too many miles on the odometer.. Also if you just want to commute, why not buy a CAR? Did you forget the high gas prices or something?

Ah that's probably right. That's 100k miles +/- 20k. Seems about right for that age of vehicle.

The 4.0L 6-cylinder motor is one of the most reliable ever made. Check for rust on the floorboards. Electrical issues are common, but easily sorted out.

Confirm 4wd works. The rear main seal will probably be leaking, but just leave it unless its more than a drop. Rust is a killer.

Personally, I suggest you move up to 97+ models as this was the redesign.

Jeep/Chrysler automatic transmissions suck. Find a manual, if you can. If not, do your homework on the model. I know the Grand Cherokee switched from a 42RH (hydraulic) to a 42RE (electric) transmission sometime in the mid-90's for the 4.0L engine. I'm guessing they did so as well for the Cherokee. I think the 42RE is more reliable.

The Cherokee only ever used the Aisin AW4. There were no other automatics in the Cherokee. It's pretty much as bulletproof as the engine itself.

4.0 liter straight six is pretty bullet proof. I guess from what JDub sais the trannies are poop. The only other problem with the Cherokees that I know about is they tend to rust like mofos. You'd better crawl underneath any you're looking at to get a look at the undercarriage and make sure it's not rusting into nothing.

It's not uncommon for the 4.0L to idle a little bit rougher than a typical car. As iamwiz has said its pretty common for the rear main seal to look wet with oil. It seems that the majority of these engines have this leak and will go forever without getting much worse.

If you can move up to the '97 or later. The vehicle had a model update that year and it's a bit nicer.

Rust can get bad on these vehicles. My 93 had huge holes through the floorboard, still ran great though. It will keep running even as the vehicle is getting eaten from the bottom up.

The transmissions an the grand cherokee are questionable like JDub said but there was only one automatic used on the 4.0L normal cherokee and it's amazingly reliable. The AW4 transmission is about bullet proof as you can ask for.

i wonder why they used a lousy one on the ZJ then ...

i guess the 42RH/E wasn't too bad. i did fairly well on my 2. my 94 and 97 ZJ's didn't start having transmission troubles until ~100k miles.

my dodge truck transmission is still going strong at 81k miles. it's more or less a beefed up version of the 42RE paired to the 5.9 v8. most people are amazed that i don't have a rebuilt transmission. ..... now the rust underneath just screams dodge! 😛

The AW4 was available in the ZJ grand cherokee but I think it was only available behind the I6.
