Jeep Cherokee weigha ~3300 lbs, Toyota Tacoma weighs ~5200 lbs...

Why is the Tacoma so much heavier? They seem about the same overall size, both have 4wd and six cylinder engines. I'm assuming the Cherokee would be a good bit quicker (for a truck/suv) since it's almost a ton lighter and has roughly equal power output. Anyone have opinions on either of these things?

Fact the cherokee is a unibody might cut down on some weight.

I think you are comparing trucks from two different classes.
The Tacoma weighs about what most of the full size pickups weigh.

Strange, Edmunds.com gave me a weight of 5100+ for a 97 Taco.

Strange, Edmunds.com gave me a weight of 5100+ for a 97 Taco.

Yeah, Edmunds gave you a gross weight of 5100 for the Tacoma. If you look to the left, you'll see the curb weight is 3400 lbs. Gross weight is the weight of the truck + all your sh!t.

The Toyota website has the curb weight (6 cylinder) pegged at less than the Cherokee.
