Jeep 2004 Owners - Question

Friend's got this jeep and was wondering if anyone would know.

She went to dealer for oil change and they tried to talk her into some special oil for the rear. I know she has 4x4, she's has no clue what they're talking about. So I'm assuming this is for the rear axle ? is this gear oil ?

If anyone has one, le me know what the schedule maintenance for it.. they wanted like 425 to change that out.

Any info or sites would be cool.. thanks..

How many miles?

At around 30k I believe they suggest you do the front and rear diffs, plus the transfer case. If she has QuadraDrive 2 it will be a bit more because they have to put LSD friction modifier in there, too, IIRC.

32k right now... I guess is it about time..

How can you tell if it's got quadra drive ii ? vin # ? i guess ill go search more..


Is this something you can drain and fill yourself ? Also do you need to check the levels monthly ?

You can do it yourself, but it's messy.

You will need to pop off the fill plug on the differential, unbolt the cover (10-12 bolts, depending on the model of axle), drain everything, clean it up with brake cleaner, clean up the magnet, put RTV on the cover, bolt it back into place, refill up to the fill plug, re-plug hole.

It's easy to check though. Pop off the fill plug and stick your finger in. BTW, gear oil stinks.

If it's quadradrive 2 it'll say on the back of the Jeep.

Quadratrac 1 has no lever for 4wd, it's always on and there is no nuetral of 4LO.
Quadratrac 2 has a lever for shifting into neutral and 4LO.
Quadradrive 2 has a lever for shifting into neutral and 4LO, but is more sophisticated.
