Speaking as a registered Liberal I'm baffled at how stupidly the Chretien government has acted in the past with regards to the Bush administration. During the election, Chretien's nephew (then ambassador to the U.S.) called Gore a 'friend of Canada' and Bush as someone who routinely forgets the name of our prime minister. That was major misstep #1.

Next we have this little situation here. You Americans should be informed that Francoise Ducros is universally hated in the capital of our country as an ultra-abrasive woman who can't keep her tongue in check - though she has some amazing other political talents. Chretien has made an enormous amount of silly moves lately that are making a lot of us wonder what the hell is going on, and although I for one admire the man for his incredible reign in Ottawa it's a good thing it's coming to an end. Even though a large number of people may agree with Ms. Ducros this is NOT acceptable behaviour coming from so high up.

That's the important distinction. You don't see bush saying how he's like to see Saddamn raped by a camel, even if it did happen to fall into his fantasies. Some things leaders just should not say, and this was one of them. It's totally counter productive.
