My stardard answer to "which app server is better?": :)

What's your definition of an "app server"?

In other words, do you really plan to use EJB, JMS, etc., or all you need is just a servlet engine?
For a real app server, both JBoss and weblogic are decent - it then comes to "the money thing". JBoss is free but you have to pay for the documentation. Weblogic charges upfront but you get tech support.
If all you need is a decent servlet engine, TomCat has a very solid track record, and it's free.
