I'm looking for some jazz tunes that have really upbeat and energetic saxaphone in them. Where the sax player is going wild hitting the highs and lows, not the slow sappy stuff. I'm sure there are lots of Jazz and Blues listners around here, anyone with some suggestions?

Definately John Coltrane. If you are in to really wild highs and lows you should get Interstellar Space by him. Ornette Coleman is also pretty good, but he is a more Free Jazz type of sax player.

Not too bad suggestions there. My Jazz collection is growing rather nicely.

Dave Koz does some nice stuff, also found one track, Careless Whisper from this cd (I think) it's not too bad at all. But so far I haven't been able to find any of the others. Anyone ever heard of that CD before?

I like jazz alot. You can't go wrong with Charlie Parker if your a sax man. He was the father of jazz sax.

However, you might not be aware of the more modern jazz scene that has been developing the last ten years or so. It is basically a spawn from the jamband scene and is generally considered hippie music by many. But, it's jazz brought into the modern era. The melodies seem more prominent and groove oriented than traditional jazz artists.

If you want to check out what I consider to be more modern jazz, check out some of these groups:

Robert Walter & The 20th Congress - These guys are just about the funkiest thing touring today. If you ever have a chance to catch these guys live, it's very impressive. Their current sax player may be the best I've ever seen (in person, not in history). He is absolutely incredible and can go for hours. Very groove based jazz with funk thrown all around. Robert's latest disc, "There goes the neighborhood" is more traditional, while his older recorded stuff is more funk and groove. Check out the 'media lounge' and download some live shows or some songs from earlier albums

Galactic - These guys are from New Orleans and are based out of traditional jazz beginnings. They mainly play groove and funk. For the most part, they are instrumental, but they have a lead singer that will come out and sing for 2 or 3 songs and then leave for an hour before doing another couple songs. The sax player in this band is right on and very good in his own right. The drummer, however, is what fuels this band. Stanton Moore is one of the top drummers today. He's a freakin drum machine. I've seen him several times with Galactic and out on his own and each time I'm impressed more and more. I'm close to buying plane tickets to see him and some of his friends in Colorado open for String Cheese. Plenty of live shows on there to sample.

Medeski Martin & Wood - No sax in the band but these guys are some of the forefathers of modern groove jazz. Very complex arrangement with a groove direction. Their shows are incredible if you can catch them live. Three guys, all outstanding at their instruments. This is more jazz than the others listed here, but no sax in the band. However, they record with the sax sometime and you'll hear it pop up every now and again on their discs. And I've seen them live with horns before.

Les Claypool and the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade - Not necessarily jazz, but groove oriented rock. The sax player in this band is Sherik. He gets around the scene a lot. Has played with everyone from Mike Clark to Stanton Moore to Les Claypool. While this is more rock than jazz, I thought I'd point out the sax player because he's very good.

I'm a fan of all jazz, but I've moved more and more into this scene as the years go buy. I still like throwing some Art Blakey or Herbie in the disc player, but these guys just do more for me nowdays. I like the groove aspects more. Maybe you'll find something you like.
