No, he didn't. Some guy bid $1 million for that car almost a year ago at an auction. The same guy also paid $1 million for the 3rd corvette ever made, which was the first one to be sold to the public, at the same auction.

so what exactly is inefficient about producing more torque in a lighter and physically smaller package? I'd REALLY like to know. and it wins on fuel efficiency too. you can thank those extra 100 ft-lbs f torque.

Like the other people here who seem to have some form of mechanical aptitude I would also like to know why it is inefficient -- because right now all you seem to be doing is following the typical american engine bashers canned script.

Please, tell me why I should spend more money to produce an engine that is much heavier, larger, and makes less power. I apologize for being ignorant when it comes to why the pushrod engine is inefficient -- so lets hear why.

And there is nothing inherently inefficient or particularly antiquated about OHV compared to OHC. It's not like OHC is some amazing modern technology, unless you swallowed some marketing koolaid. In the meantime, 638 hp from such a compact, lightweight package pretty much defines efficient and modern.

you won't see a factory one. IIRC, chevy stated that they chose the 6.2 over the 7.0 because of the cylinder walls. i thought they stated that the 6.2 could easily withstand the added pressure of the supercharger while the 7L might not. could have just been smoke.

ligenfelter (sp?) has a turbo for the 427.

I think you misunderstand good engineering. It's not about using all the most advanced technology, it's about getting the best performance with the least drawbacks. If you can get more power out of a lighter, physically smaller, cheaper, more durable engine that engine is superior. Hands down. I don't care if it's not using the latest and greatest components made of unobtanium. In the engineering world it's all about the numbers and in this case GM wins on every single front.

As an engineer (though I'm in Aerospace engines, not automotive) there's a great deal of respect for what we consider an elegant solution. The simplest solution to get you the performance you need is invariably the best one.

 
Leno doesn't know jack - bmw has hud too. 😉 Stick to talking about the engine and the grunt Jay.
 
Man I would love to get my hands on one of those cars. ahhh only 11 more years till my mid-life crisis. "wifey it's either you or I get my vette...you choose" 😉
 
The Corvette has always been one of the best value for the buck sports cars.
Easy maintenance and repair is a huge plus, not to mention a giant selection of after-market parts.

638 hp to move 2 people is not efficient 😛
 
I'd love to have one of those. Truely one of the coolest "affordable" (~100K) cars ever. That being THE first production car, can you imagine what that'll be worth in future years to another collector if Jay ever sells it?
 
I personally would rather get a Dodge Viper, very cool car, no stigma about having a small cock or an attention whore, bang for the buck, tremendous performance, but low handling. Well whatever, I want one. 😀
