"If you?re a fan of Jay Leno?s Garage, you probably remember his tank car, a King Kong sized, 9500-lb. hot rod built around a 1792 cid V-12 Continental-designed, Chrysler-built, tank engine. With 810 hp and 1560 lb.-ft of torque, you?d think that might be enough oomph for Leno right? Wrong.

Hot rodding turbo legend Gale Banks has been a friend of Leno?s for years.

?There?s two things Jay wants in a car, a loud horn and huge power,? says Banks. So about two years ago, Leno approached Banks with the idea of twin turbocharging the tank car?s massive air-cooled engine. And it?s just now coming together in time for the August unveiling at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit.

Finding stuff to hot-rod a tank engine from the 1950?s ain?t easy. So many of the parts Banks and his team had to build themselves?out of giant slabs of billet aluminum. And they worked with the Robert Bosche company to convert the engine to fuel injection. The fuel rails alone are the size of V8 camshafts. The turbos were sourced from Honeywell/Garrett Turbo Technologies and are magnesium-housing units originally used for Toyota?s CART efforts. They don?t sell them, officially, but if they did you?d pay close to $10,000 per copy. Get this, the tag on the housings read part number ?714201-leno?.

Cool.

Banks estimates the whole shebang will produce 1600 hp and 3000-lb.-ft of torque. However the 6-speed Allison transmission has a torque limit. So Banks will limit the motor?s output in at least First gear. Still, this thing should light the tires up like a Top Fueler. "

But air cooled? They're going to be able to run this thing 5 minutes at a time.

Theres no hood.

That's true - I guess you could have a stoker shoveling ice onto it as you go.

I would've been more excited if it were a Rolls Merlin or Griffin engine in there. Those two were amazing powerplants.

And cooling... how do you think the tank kept it cool? I'm sure he'll have no problem with an open-hood, air-cooled setup.

It wasn't turbocharged in the tank - that adds alot of heat.

Oops, that's true. Half of me kept thinking about WW2 aircraft engines--those 2 rolls models used a 2stage turbo, allowing the later models to push well in exces of 2000hp. But those all had gigantic ports for air or liquid cooling... lol. My bad.

The original 100,000 lb tank got 3 gallons per mile

turbocharged 10,000 lb car...not sure

Yea, alot of hte WWII aircraft engines were aircooled and supercharged. But look at the design - the cylinder jugs on those radials had high speed airflow going through all around them. Also designed to operate at high altitudes, which changes a few things. And some still had heat problems. The early B-29's were plagued by heat problems.

Anyway - it's a helluva cool car! I'm sure they've taken this into consideration - even if it means only closing the wastegate for 5 minutes at a time that's going to be an insane 5 minutes :D

The two turbo won't put out much heat compared to the massive engine. 64 quarts of oil + plenty of air it shouldn't be a problem. Hell he can use water cooled turbos, a pump, and a radiator just for the turbos if he needs too.

I like the comments at the bottom of the articles... I guess Jay can manipulate physics to his will.
