Companies have been doing this for a while but Java is essential, so it makes this worse.

Yeah I had to walk my coworkers through installing this update without accidentally getting crapware. They kept hitting "ignore" or something and it would nag them to install the update every morning when they turned on their computers.

How does this not wreak havoc on corporations?
If I worked in IT, I would be pissed...

Corporations generally automate that install process, and prohibit end users from installing applications (if not technically then by employee policy)... so it's not quite as much of a problem there as you might imagine.

I hate all these embedded programs running their auto updates all the time, Flash, and Java. It wreaks havoc on my parent's machine!

You forgot Adobe

Eh - it still can. We have a large number of contractors who use their personal equipment but our software. Sadly, the Google toolbar interfers with our software and more than a couple of programs will install that if you don't uncheck the box

We have other issues that result in this causing a lot of problems for us

Fuck Oracle. they have totally fucked up SUN and we are in the process of getting rid of our SUN boxes. To get patches now YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SUPPORT CONTRACT!!! not just any support contract but a line item support contract. for us that support contract cost more than the fucking machines did. SUN Patches used to be free like Microsoft patches.

so fuck you oracle, you are out the door.

Wow, that really sounds like Oracle too. I remember back in 2000 a client wanted to use our product with Oracle. We had to initiate a whole relationship with Oracle just to get something to install and test against. What a fricking pain in the ass... it was many many forms to fill out, etc. SQL Server, mysql, postgresql, SQLite, DB2.... one download away and you're in business.

At least they can be disabled. MS has something hidden somewhere in IE7 that detects the 2nd or 3rd time it is launched and redirects the user to the page to install IE8.

My favorite was trying to uninstall the Oracle installer which would give you a message "You do not need to uninstall the Oracle installer".

i work not to far from the SUN campus in broomfield CO. I have several friends who saw the writing on the wall when SUN merged with Storage Tech and got the hell out. when the Oracle deal was made public they knew they made the right decision.

Adobe is by far the worst. You boot up your machine and you're instantly harassed with updates for Flash and Reader... as if I own a PC for the sole fucking purpose of using Adobe Reader.

Fuck off, Adobe.

Carbonite approaches Java / Sun and says "Hey, we'll give you an assload of money if you bundle in our software with yours", Java / Sun shrugs and says "Eh, free money, why not?" and ruins your day by including Carbonite in with Java.

This is why virtualized software is great. Package Firefox with Java and configure it exactly the way you want and you are good to go.

You can disable the flash one by creating a ascii file called mms.cfg with the line AutoUpdateDisable=1 inside. Look here for more info about where to put the file depending on your version of Windows.

I guess what bothers me most is that these stupid programs are running before I've even logged in. Flash shouldn't be running until I hit a page with a Flash element. Reader shouldn't be running until *gasp* I open a bloody PDF.

I have fought my client tooth-and-nail for over a decade to avoid having our software behave in similar fashion. Every stuffed-shirt CEO/tech VP thinks their is software special, and that it should be at the center of its users' universes.
